Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a software engineer, I develop and maintain IBM MQ for z/OS, tackling complex APAR fixes, automating processes, and ensuring security updates are delivered on time. My role involves diagnosing customer issues. problem-solving, coding fixes and sending those to customers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love the flexibility the Open University provide as to when and where you can study, since the content is delivered entirely virtually. I think the content they deliver is very current and high quality. I've been impressed by how quickly they update learning content regarding current events.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve enhanced my problem-solving and debugging skills by working on complex software issues. My collaboration and mentoring abilities have grown through team projects and knowledge sharing. I’ve also developed automation and tooling expertise while strengthening my adaptability, resourcefulness, and ability to deliver high-quality solutions in a structured development environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My entire programme was clearly laid out to me before I started it, with a roadmap of what i'd be studying and when. Meeting with my practice tutor regularly has also helped with clearing up any queries. Overall, a very well structured programme.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My line manager is very accommodating of my apprenticeship workload and is always happy to give me more time for apprenticeship work when I need it, which is very kind. I feel supported by my team also and by my foundation manager, who provides support specifically for my programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I was assigned a practice tutor at the start of the programme who is always available for apprenticeship related questions and meets with me regularly. I'm also assigned a tutor for each module I study, who I can discuss course content with in more detail.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My apprenticeship has exposed me to a wide array of skills that I wouldn't of encountered in my core role, which I've then used to implement automation projects for my team and department. Learning about software engineering has also improved the quality of the software I produce.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, too many to name. IBMers frequently organise social events like office bake offs, team lunches, lunchtime 5k races! just to name a few. I'm also frequently exposed to professional networking opportunities like conferences and summits, at which we're encouraged to network and promote IBM.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I like the culture of the company. I like the recognition and support I get for my work from my team and manager. I've found IBMers to be kind, competent and generally pleasant to work with. I'm exposed to opportunities to develop myself and progress in my career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
Do it! Applying for a position, regardless of the outcome, can only benefit you because you get better at the application/interview process.
