Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Working at the NHS is an experience like no other - each day brings something new and you will never be bored. Time management between Graphic design, photoshoots, typesetting and printing is an essential and this job has helped me develop that balance. I've been able to interact with the teams in and around the hospital and met many teams that are so kind and friendly despite being busy! It's a great environment if you thrive under pressure and teaches you life long skills that you won't find anywhere else.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
It's been an adventure from day 1 and knowing I have a good group of colleagues around me makes me excited to come into work each day. The roles itself is challenging but not difficult and so I know that it allows for me to study, work, and still have a life outside of being an apprentice which I am very grateful for.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
As an apprentice I was ready to learn new skills, explore new software and dive into a totally new environment of work life. Having the weekly university course helped me take what I learnt and apply it directly into my NHS role; it helped me help others by bringing them into new technologies and ways of working that would have otherwise bypassed them.
I learnt that my opinion as an apprentice can help benefit others just as much as being an apprentice benefits me.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The routine between work (Monday, Wednesday-Friday) and the university day (Tuesday) is great, however, my actual work day is unstructured and doesn't link into what I am doing either at university or for university and the communication between the 2 I feel has never been as effective as it could have been as an overall apprenticeship. It would be good to have more structure between the two especially at work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer gives me the freedom to take extra time when I have upcoming projects at university and is unaffected by the Tuesday that I have off for lectures. My team also advocate for me to keep Tuesdays free for study which is encouraging!
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes
Why?
You will never find a more juxtaposing work environment that will surround you with the friendliest people in high pressure work environments. Each day is different and the skills you pick up are transferrable into all aspects of life. The work you do directly affects those around you and you feel you are adding value to the building, teams, patients and staff around you. There is no where like working in the NHS.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust?
Expect the unexpected, make friends, enjoy your work and look at the difference you can bring from your course, because your voice matters here and you can make a difference from day 1, even as an apprentice.
