Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an apprentice cyber security engineer focused on networking in OT enviroments projects vary from network segmentation projects to assisting with configuring secure communications and documents findings and changes. I make a substantial difference to OT networks and gain hands-on experience with protocols, firewalls, and compliance in critical infrastructure environments.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme as it allows me to work hands-on with real OT networks, develop my technical skills, and contribute to meaningful projects. The mix of learning and practical experience keeps me engaged and motivated to grow within the cyber security field.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve developed my skills in network traffic analysis, firewall configuration, and secure protocol implementation. I’ve also improved my documentation and project planning abilities while working on OT network segmentation and security enhancement projects. These experiences have strengthened both my technical knowledge and my understanding of OT cyber security.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well-structured, balancing hands-on experience with guided learning. Clear objectives, regular check-ins, and a variety of projects help build my skills progressively. Support from mentors and access to resources make it easy to stay on track and continuously develop within the OT cyber security space.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my Tekgem, including regular guidance, mentoring, and opportunities to work on real projects. They actively encourage my development by providing time and resources to study for industry-recognised exams such as CompTIA Network+ and Security+, which they also fund to support my career progression.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
QA is really supportive and easy to reach whenever I need help. They check in regularly, give useful feedback, and explain things clearly if I’m unsure about anything. It makes a big difference knowing they’re there to guide me and keep me on track with my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification helps me understand my job better. It explains why I do certain tasks and gives me more confidence when working. I’ve learned useful things that I can use day to day, and it makes it easier to see how my work fits into the bigger picture.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There aren’t many extra-curricular activities at work, but we do have a yearly Christmas event with the team. It’s a nice chance to relax, socialise, and connect with colleagues outside of the usual day-to-day work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Tekgem to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would recommend Tekgem to a friend. The team is supportive, the work is interesting, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. They really invest in your development and give you the chance to work on real projects that make a difference.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tekgem?
I’d recommend showing a genuine interest in cyber security and being open to learning. Don’t worry about knowing everything upfront, it's more important to be willing to ask questions and get stuck in. Having a good attitude, being curious, and showing you can work well in a team goes a long way here.
