Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a cybersecurity professional specializing in Operational Technology (OT), I am responsible for protecting critical infrastructure and industrial control systems from evolving cyber threats. My daily activities focus on securing and maintaining the integrity of OT environments while serving as a crucial link between IT and OT teams to foster a cohesive cybersecurity strategy. - This includes working with customers on customer projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
"I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship as a cybersecurity engineer in the OT environment. The program provides a dynamic and challenging learning experience, allowing me to apply cybersecurity principles to real-world industrial settings. I find it particularly rewarding to work on securing critical infrastructure, as it gives my role a sense of purpose and impact. The opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, gain hands-on experience with industrial control systems, and bridge the gap between IT and OT security keeps me engaged and motivated. Additionally, the fast-evolving nature of cybersecurity ensures that I am constantly developing new skills and staying ahead of emerging threats, which makes the program both exciting and fulfilling.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
During my apprenticeship as a cybersecurity engineer in the OT environment, I have gained valuable hands-on experience and developed both technical and analytical skills. I have enhanced my understanding of industrial control systems (ICS) security, network segmentation, and threat detection in OT environments. Additionally, I have improved my ability to assess vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and respond to incidents effectively. Working alongside IT and OT teams has also strengthened my communication and collaboration skills, allowing me to bridge the gap between both domains to ensure a unified cybersecurity approach. Overall, this experience has significantly expanded my technical expertise and problem-solving abilities in securing critical infrastructure.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My apprenticeship programme is well-structured and provides a clear learning path that balances theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. It includes a mix of technical training, practical projects, and mentorship from experienced professionals, which helps me develop both foundational and advanced cybersecurity skills in an OT environment. The programme also offers opportunities to work on real-world challenges, allowing me to apply what I’ve learned in a practical setting. While there is always room for improvement, such as more tailored OT-specific cybersecurity training, the overall organisation ensures that I gain valuable experience and progress effectively in my role.

5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. I have access to experienced mentors and colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge and provide guidance on both technical and professional development aspects. Regular check-ins, training sessions, and hands-on learning opportunities help reinforce my understanding of OT cybersecurity. Additionally, my employer encourages continuous learning by providing access to relevant resources, certifications, and industry events. While there are always areas for improvement, such as more structured OT-specific cybersecurity training, overall, the support I receive enables me to grow and succeed in my role.
