Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role as an apprentice cybersecurity engineer is to learn new skills through shadowing, implement them into customer work and internal projects, and reinforce my knowledge through my apprenticeship programme and training provided to me through QA. I help to carry out daily health checks of internal systems to check that everything is running as expected too.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The apprenticeship programme so far has been very enjoyable, and has allowed me to see customer sites and places which I would not have previously seen. Every day is a learning experience as something new always crops up, allowing for continuous learning to help me throughout my career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have learned new skills and developed them through both internal and external customer work, as well as development through my training programme. Attending customer site visits has helped me to put my knowledge and skills into practice, allowing a deeper insight into what I have been learning.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship is well structured and clearly organised, with each milestone having various criteria and goals to meet and achieve. Sometimes communication is not great from the trainer, however conversations with them can help clarify what I need to achieve for the tasks which have been assigned.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

As apprentices we receive a large amount of support from our employer, providing us with various training resources, emotional support, and being there for when we need them. This helps build a positive working environment, allowing us to be more productive throughout our studies.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider provides lessons, resources, and assignments to complete throughout the apprenticeship to help work towards our qualifications. Any confusion about tasks is quickly rectified, and any additional resources are freely available on their training website and various portals.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification what I am working towards will help me to become a fully qualified cybersecurity engineer which will allow me to be more independent when it comes to working on internal and customer projects.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

During the year, there are various professional networking events which we can attend. During Christmas time, we have a large Christmas do which involves go-karting and a meal.

Learning to become a cybersecurity engineer helps to build valuable skills which can be applied to places all over the country, as well as some places even outside the country. Each day brings something new, so the work is always interesting and engaging.
