Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My day-to-day job involves working on placement in an Engineering tea, learning and interacting within the team and their tasks, which can also involve broadening my horizons and networks in working across teams and disciplines.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I definitely enjoy the programme and the diverse means of learning that working in such a large organisation provides. It allows me a great exposure to a wide array of fields with experienced engineers that are always more than willing to help and provide insight into their area of expertise.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Yes, I have learnt about fundamental professional skills such as communication, resilience, and teamwork, but I am also developing a brand new set of technical knowledge and skills that will suit my overall career growth.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I enjoy the structure on a daily basis, in terms of having consistent and prolonged focus on one placement and being able to immerse myself within that, and this certainly makes the working transition easier. I also feel that there is a stronger presence and structure around the apprentices now with the Brough Early Careers team always accessible and available.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
As mentioned in the answer above, the Early Careers team and skills coaches are always willing to help and are always available to address any queries or problems. Placement managers are also very reliable and helpful in this regard, as well as aiding with any daily tasks.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
As apprentices, we are allotted a generous amount of time within our working week to tackle our Level 4 diploma, on top of our university release day, meaning that we have ample time and opportunity to make steady and sufficient progress on this front.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Our university course is useful in the way it works in tandem with placements, often contextualising and adding value to our day-to -day work, as well as even providing a less intense and more focused means of steadily approaching a new subject or field. For example, it can prove valuable when learning a new module that overlaps with placements, as there is more time devoted to simply developing an understanding of the subject matter, before applying it in literal terms in work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are frequent communications about various social activities and networking events, both from the Early Careers network and the wider company itself, encouraging apprentices and other employees to broaden their networks and interact with other colleagues in various enrichment forums.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
While being a large and broad enterprise, there is certainly a strong interconnection and support network across the company that makes me feel safe and supported in my working life, both personally and professionally, making BAE Systems a great place to work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
