Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
It involves web development, fixing issues and implementing features using coding languages such as VUE.JS, SQL and Carbon HTML all within an Agile environment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the problem solving aspect in this programme whether it’s in my project role or in my academic work in addition to gaining knowledge and applying it in my role.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Coding, consulting, client communication, time management, team management/project management.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
One issue about my programme is the ambiguity. Naturally in a consulting company, it’s difficult to understand exactly what to specialise and finding out which part of tech I fit in as different projects means I need to adapt my skill-set continuously.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
A lot of support, IBM being now familiar with apprenticeships means there’s a lot of understanding about me needing to spend time off work for of the job learning, meeting my KSBs and overall the feeling that I am in good capable hands to meet success.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
A medium amount of support, there has been times where I had to fully do my own research for an assignment as the lessons didn’t really explain the content in a simple manner.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
As of now, MMU taught me about Database fundamentals such as SQL, learning Java and project management. All of these have helped indirectly or directly into my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are some apprentice based socials in our office, however I would say majority of the events occur in the London branch.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall, with IBM, especially in consulting, you have control of your career. Although difficult, if you wanted to specialise in data or cyber, you have that choice of refining your skills and applying to those specific roles in future projects. You chose which projects to apply for.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
Understand that IBM doesn’t necessarily need you to be an expert, they want an apprentice who is motivated, disciplined, and excited about tech. Doing courses in your own time supports that narrative massively which appeals to IBM.
