Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am currently in my first year, training at a skills development centre, I am yet to start my job role. most days I undertake workshop exercises, theory lessons and report writing.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my program, the subject of electrical and electronic engineering, and the work environment a lot. However there are also a lot of tedious tasks which do not feel relevant to my learning and development. the courses planning has also meant that there are many instances where there is little to do or not an instructor available to teach which I feel is wasted time as I could be learning. when I am doing something I enjoy it a lot.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Yes, many as I didn't have any previous experience. Working in the workshop is helpful and lectures are good. the training centre has the resources and equipment to train many skills, although I think they should be used more. I could have learnt much more if I was given more opportunity on equipment, received more lectures and had more time with my instructors. When my instructors are available, I am able to learn a lot and to a high quality.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
The course has not been well organised. The order of delivered units doesn't make sense, with subjects like maths and electronic principles coming after units which are already using the maths and electronic principles we shouldn't be expected to know? the course has suffered due to the changing of level from 2 to 3 (although I do think that was a good thing), as well as changing instructors, unavailable instructors, and instructors being unable to teach because of other requirements the business want from them (like meetings, being on other courses etc). when an instructor is unavailable or there is nothing planned for us to do we often are put on other tasks, like workshop exercises. Whilst these are good and develop my skills in those areas, they can feel irrelevant to the trade I am studying. I have been here six month and could have learned much more than I have, but due to the poor planning, I haven't. I am here because I want to be a great electrician, I have a good attitude and desire to learn my trade, I am malleable and ready to learn and develop, but feel I am constantly prevented from doing so because of the stated problems, mainly with planning, unavailable instructors and wasted time. When we get a three weeks to complete a unit, when we have no background with the level 2, or even principle and maths, we spend a lot of time catching up in those areas rather than just learning the content for the unit so everything is crammed into the three weeks meaning I am not learning as much as I could about the unit itself in the time allocated for it. If the course was organised properly, the potential for learning is definitely there.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I feel I can receive good support from my employer when If and when I need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
when my instructors/equipment are available, their training is very good and relevant to the trade I am studying, I just wish I had more of it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I have not yet started my role but feel the training will be relevant when I start.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are activities which I can join if I desire.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The job roles are very interesting, hands on and enjoyable. the equipment and work environment is very good and instructors are very knowledgeable. If the apprenticeship was better planned, the potential for learning and development would be unmatched when compared to other apprenticeships.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
You should be passionate about the role you are applying for, as well as the work environment and come with a good attitude.
