Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My role as an apprentice involves rotating through different departments within the business, completing four-month placements in each area to enhance my skills and knowledge across various functions. On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities in 3A include conducting DSUMS (Daily Start-Up Meetings), participating in meetings to discuss progress and priorities, and collaborating with the shop floor team to understand the challenges they face with tools and equipment. I then work to identify the root causes of these issues, using CATIA models and engineering drawings to develop solutions and improve processes. This hands-on experience allows me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations and contribute to continuous improvement efforts across the business.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I do enjoy the programme overall, as it provides valuable hands-on experience and the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills. However, there are times when it can be a bit frustrating, particularly when I'm waiting for access to systems or tools that are necessary to complete tasks. During these periods, I’m unable to fully engage in certain activities, which can feel limiting. Despite this, I understand that these challenges are part of the learning process, and I always try to stay productive by focusing on other aspects of my role during downtime.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Yes, I have significantly developed both new and existing skills during my time in this role. I have gained advanced in CATIA, which has allowed me to create and manipulate complex models and engineering drawings. Additionally, I’ve honed my problem-solving skills by identifying and addressing issues on the shop floor, finding effective solutions to improve processes. My communication skills have also improved, particularly in collaborating with cross-functional teams and conveying technical information clearly. Lastly, I’ve had the opportunity to enhance my public speaking skills, as I’ve been involved in presenting findings and updates during meetings, which has boosted my confidence in speaking in front of groups.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
In my opinion, the programme could be better organised and structured. Initially, the overall framework and expectations of the programme were unclear, and it was only after raising questions that things were clarified. Ideally, this information should have been provided from the outset to avoid confusion. Additionally, the rotation of placements is communicated only two weeks in advance, which creates challenges for placement managers in arranging the necessary access and resources to ensure we can be productive from day one. Another issue I’ve encountered is being placed in roles where there isn’t a lot of immediate work to do, though this does provide the opportunity to focus on NVQ coursework during quieter periods. Despite these challenges, I believe the programme offers valuable learning experiences, and I hope that some of these organisational aspects can be improved for future cohorts.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive consistent support from my employer, and assistance is always readily available whenever I need it. Whether I have questions or require guidance, I can rely on my colleagues and managers to provide the help I need to succeed. This open and supportive environment has been invaluable in helping me develop both personally and professionally.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The support I receive from my training provider is exceptional and tailored to my needs. Whenever I require assistance, whether it's for coursework, practical skills, or guidance with my qualifications, the support is always available. In addition to the training provider, I also receive valuable support from everyone at BAE Systems, which creates a collaborative and encouraging environment for my growth. This comprehensive support system has been integral to my success in the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification through the training provider plays a significant role in enhancing my performance in my role. The knowledge and skills I gain from the qualification directly contribute to my ability to handle tasks more effectively and confidently. It provides me with a solid theoretical foundation, which I can apply in real-world situations, allowing me to approach challenges with a deeper understanding. This combination of learning and practical experience helps me perform at a higher level and continuously improve in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
