Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role involves carrying out research into the performance of programmes on Channel 4, researching performance across both linear and video on demand services [All 4]. Additionally, we investigate audience opinions of different programmes, sending out surveys and using this insight to improve our programming slate and inform the development of future series.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I have enjoyed learning about the research industry and the options available to me within this sector. It has been really useful to learn about different elements of research and then have the opportunity to put these into practice in my day-to-day job role. There have been parts of it [such as statistics] which were more difficult.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned many new skills while working at Channel 4 - because I had never worked in television, research or analytics before, I have learned how to use new industry-wide systems [such as TechEdge and Tableau]. I have developed my analytical and problem solving skills, as well as my skills using Excel.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
The organisation and structure of the programme is an area of development for Swarm. Although it was clear how the programme would work in terms of the portfolio development / EPA split, communication has been consistently disorganised with there being lots of mix ups and non-communication about certain elements. For example, it was not made clear from the beginning about the need for portfolio evidence locator forms / project report evidence locators to be completed, leading to additional unexpected work once I had completed my portfolio. It also was not made clear that I was to submit my presentation slides and project proposal at the same time, leading to me having to put my presentation together last minute and not being able to give this the care and attention I had wanted to. There were also discrepancies about grades - with us being told on one occasion that we could achieve either a pass or a distinction, then on another occasion being told it was pass / merit / distinction. Although these issues were resolved later on, it should all be set out from the beginning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been very supportive in allowing me the time to complete my apprenticeship, with my line manager always receptive and accommodating when I asked to have time to work on it. Additionally, when I was considering leaving the scheme due to a lack of motivation, my employer did everything they could to encourage me to stay - which I am very appreciative of.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider has been very supportive, liaising with me to arrange meetings and providing support where I have needed it. Whenever I have had a question that I have needed help with, she has always responded on the same day; and when I was completing my project report, she worked across her annual leave to help me with it. I am very grateful for her support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I believe that I would have learned a lot of the skills and knowledge from my apprenticeship through doing my research, but the apprenticeship has just fast tracked that. It has helped me develop my knowledge about some of the elements of my role; but I would not say it has impacted my performance too much.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are many employee groups within the business to get involved in - for example 4Earth, which focusses on the environment and 4Women which celebrates women within the business and raises awareness of female issues such as the menopause. There are also social activities such as summer and Christmas parties, alongside the team-level socials organised more locally within the business.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Channel 4 to a friend?
Yes
Why?
My experience within my team and with those who manage me has been amazing; with everyone being incredibly supportive and understanding; not just when things are good, but also when things go wrong. Working here has been a breath of fresh air in terms of the warmth and understanding of the people around me. The company also offers great benefits to its employees and looks after us.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Channel 4?
Authenticity is one of the most valuable traits you can show. Channel 4 is a community of individuals who are proud of who they are and not afraid to show it; so it is definitely an advantage to demonstrate that to those who are hiring you. A willingness to learn is also so important - especially if you have never worked in TV before, it is daunting and there is a lot to learn - so it is important to be prepared for that challenge.
