My role as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor working for a main contractor involves the following:
- Providing valuations for sub-contractors in order to pay them for their work / progress correctly,
- Tracking and reporting costs against budgets and forecasts for plant, labour, and materials;
- Pricing up changes requested internally and by the client from using drawings, models and speaking to the technical design team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My apprenticeship programme with Laing O'Rourke is extremely valuable as it helps me bridge over from a student who had no work experience to a full time employee. Although it can be challenging at times, I constantly receive the support I need from my manager and work colleges to help me further understand and develop my role and responsibilities.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Throughout my apprenticeship journey with Laing O'Rourke so far, I have learnt / improved the following skills:
- Negotiation skills when speaking to in-house companies, external companies, suppliers, and the project managers (client's side).
- Administrative skills as I constantly use Microsoft applications, pdf applications, and AutoCAD applications.
- Proficiency with using Asite to understand drawings and models.
- Technical Knowledge: having a good understanding of construction technology, materials, and methods, which helps me to identify and resolve construction problems.
- Analytical Skills: analysing complex data, including cost estimates, schedules, and project specifications. Analytical skills are essential for identifying trends, patterns, and opportunities for improvement.

If, I am facing challenges at University or at work, my colleagues and line manager are always available to overcome these. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There are a wide range options available to me when working towards my qualification. This support can include access to academic advisors or mentors, study skills workshops, online resources and materials, opportunities for networking and collaboration with other students, and feedback on assessments and coursework to help me understand how I can be successful in pursuing my degree.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

A Quantity Surveying degree sets a strong foundation of theory for me to apply practically in my job role, enabling me to perform better at my tasks by understanding what I need to do beforehand. A degree in Quantity Surveying will give me a deep understanding of construction economics, law, and management, as well as technical knowledge of construction methods and materials. This enables me to effectively manage costs, negotiate prices to variations. In addition, a Quantity Surveying degree helps me to develop strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills, all of which are critical for success in the industry.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
