Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

It involved taking surveys, setting out gridlines, traversing, levelling and transferring datums all around site. Interacting with engineers and managers to find what is required. I am both in the office and onsite, I complete uni work and basic processing of data.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Although it was quite a slow start at the beginning of the apprenticeship, I slowly developed my knowledge and felt more involved in the work that was taking place. This made me feel more part of a team rather than just standing and watching. Currently I'm looking forward to gaining more responsibility and hope that I will be taught more about the processing of the data we take.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed new skills, in terms of learning how to use the surveying equipment such as the total station, setting up prisms and the dumpy level. It has taught me the importance of accuracy. I have also developed my personal development and CPD to improve my opportunities in my future career, as well as my communication skills with my surrounding colleagues which helps increase my networking skills.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I'm part of the first apprentices that are doing this programme in this company, and I get the idea that we are all learning on the way . However, my line manager knows the importance of communication and checking on with what we need and need to complete in our apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

With being part of the first apprentices all of the surrounding surveyors are more than happy to help and show support to our needs when we ask. My line manager provides teams calls regularly to check how we are getting on and if there are any areas that require improvement.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I go to university every Monday, and receive a variation of modules in order to give me a range of knowledge that will help support me in my future career. I know that I can always email or come and see the lecturers if I needed any help or support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I believe that my training provider assists with the theoretical knowledge and teaches a range of modules in which I wouldn't particularly learn in much detail at work. However, I do believe that working on site for me is equally if not more valuable as it provides the practical, realistic view of the role and provides me with valuable work experience and opportunity to network within the construction industry.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are multiple opportunities available such as the early talent Women's - Safe Space Sessions. There is also yoga that happens regularly at Olympia. There has also been social activities provided by the company, such as bowling and drinks, as well as the LOR Christmas Party which allowed me to network more.

Why?
It is a great company that provides support and assistant when needed. The company has a friendly environment making me feel happy to come to work each day as well as everyone being willing to help or answer any of my questions.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
Make sure that you have some knowledge and passion for the role that you're applying too, as well as having good communication skills and willingness to learn. I would always recommend to be yourself and have the ability to work well as a team, therefore have relatively good people skills.
