Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a digital engineer apprentice I am set a range of tasks which involve modelling elements for different projects. I assist on the digital build to ensure that clashes are detected prior to the construction phase which saves time and money. The role varies from day to day but always involves some kind of modelling and constantly developing new skills!
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I thoroughly enjoy this programme as I am constantly learning new things while also developing the skills I previously had. I have developed relationships within the team I am in and have also worked on a range of different projects since I have started.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I previously had some basic modelling skills using one software however since starting a few months ago, I have learnt various other software's since while also developing my skills further using the software I already knew. We had a very detailed introduction the the Digital Engineering function which included a 2 month training programme taking us through the basics all the way to being able to model independantly which set us up very well for starting on projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme seems well structured. I attend work 4 days a week and university 1 day a week. The course does not directly link with the job however it is good to have a basic understanding of construction as a whole as this helps with the knowledge for projects.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer is very supportive of both my development at work and my studies. I am always given an appropriate amount of time to complete my studies when necessary and have regular reviews with my employer and university to keep on track and to raise any concerns when they arise.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The lecturers are not always the most useful however I always ensure I get what I need and if I am missing anything, I have a great team around me at work to ask for advice and help. I have regular reviews with my university so there is the opportunity to raise questions and concerns during these.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Although the qualification is not the most relevant to my role, I gain an appreciation for the areas that I do not work in but can understand the links between how the different skills and functions work together.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are always opportunities to attend careers and networking events and as a team we try to do social events when we can to improve the relationships between colleagues.

Yes
Why?
I have had an amazing experience so far and have developed significantly within my role while I have been here. Getting the opportunity to work on live projects has exposed me to a variety of knowledge and skills which I wasn't aware of before and I have the chance to develop these on a regular basis.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
Research about the company values and methods before applying (as they can be quite different to other construction companies), also be yourself when you go through the application process and just enjoy it :)
