Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Day to day, I currently am working on developing an internal website for use within the company. During the day, I have several meetings with various people to discuss activities and also to request help and advice. I work in a small team made up of a couple of more experienced coders but also three other apprentices.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my programme. My day at university is really fun and interesting and helps me to expand my skills and give me knowledge which I can take back to work. I also get to meet lots of people there. My work is interesting and I am surrounded by lots of kind, caring and helpful people.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes. Since joining, I have developed my coding skills, including learning JavaScript, which was a completely new language to me when I joined. I have also developed my communication and presenting skills and my confidence has grown greatly during my time with the company due to both the environment and people I am working with.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is very well structured. I have a university day on a Monday and then work for the remaining four days. This works well and I know where I stand and what my schedule is for each week as it always follows this structure. During university holidays, I am given plenty of time to study and learn.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive lots of support from my employer. They provide regular feedback for me along with two monthly reviews to check my progress and to also see if there is any help or support that they would be able to give me. They are always honest with their feedback which is great.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive lots of support from the training provider. All staff are very good and supportive and are always open to questions and want you to do well. You can email them on any day, even when you're not there, and they respond promptly to try help you solve the issue you are having.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel that certain elements of my qualification that help me perform better in my role. For example, the web development section helped me a lot as this is what I do in my role. Other elements are not as relevant to my role but may be relevant to other people on the course as they have to account for all sorts of roles.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are various meet ups and activities organised which people can take part in if they would like, including a lot of charity work/ events. Personally, I haven't done any of these as they are not practical for me to attend but from what I have heard, they are very good.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is amazing to earn as you are being trained. The support is amazing and all of the people I have come across are always willing to help you if needed. For me, the experience has been very positive so far and I have no reason to not recommend the company to other people looking for tech apprenticeships.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
I would say that it is vital to apply as soon as the window opens as available places in the application process fill up within a day. And then just be yourself and put yourself out there. The best thing you can do is throw yourself into challenges you face and see what happens.
