Software Development Engineer Review

Worked as part of the Expedia Group Car Rentals team. Designed and implemented a feature to increase the surfacing of taxes and fees from suppliers for US points of sale. Daily activities include stand-up meetings with team members and working on the project.

I was given a significant amount of responsibility in my internship, as my feature (although placed behind an A/B test) was actually rolled out on US points of sale for Expedia Group websites. I felt that my team were very trusting of my judgements, but also checked my work to avoid my work being a risk.

Gained useful experience in understanding good software engineering practices, and working on a feature to contribute to a wider codebase. Training courses were provided on mental health, allyship, and leadership. My project also exposed me to new technologies, such as GraphQL, Kotlin, Splunk and XSLT. I also gained skills in project management, documentation, and presentation.

I received significant support and guidance. I was assigned buddies to support me on a daily basis, and met with my manager on a weekly basis as well. Expedia Group also offered Workday as a tool to receive feedback from colleagues. My team members were also willing to give help and advice at any time.

The culture is excellent, with everyone willing to provide help to each other. I experienced this first-hand when I wanted to visit the London office, and my manager (based in the US) found me contact with a UK team who were very willing to include me for the day.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship, so much so that I have also accepted a graduate offer after I complete my studies. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a welcoming and fun culture, as well as being challenged with interesting software engineering problems, that they consider applying to Expedia Group.
