Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role is running tests on an application in development for a client that IBM provides work for. I prepare tests, run them and raise incident reports/defects. There are many types of testing whether this be performance based, functional/non-functional or automated. We take part in agile practices such as stand ups and retrospectives.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have enjoyed my programme massively, everyday is different and I am always learning something new. There are new challenges to face each day and I am always working with new people to overcome these. The training courses are very good too and they change things up compared to a normal day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed lots of skills, mainly test related such as test scripting, execution and defect reports. I've also attended courses such as mobile test engineering, agile testing etc. I've learnt lots of transferrable skills such as coding/automation etc aswell as working tools such as troll etc.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme was very well organised, the induction was easy and informative. I had monthly meetings with my apprenticeship coach who set me work based on what I had been doing to fill out my portfolio. It was always very clear where I was in the programme and what I had to do next.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my manager, my apprenticeship coach and my task manager. On my project I have many people who I can report to and get support from and everyone is very helpful. My fellow apprentices always help each other too and that way we are always supported.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I received a lot of support in regards to qualification from my training provider. I had multiple contacts at GKA including my apprenticeship coach who was always very helpful and easy to talk to. Everyone else from GKA I had contact with was also very kind and helpful to me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification has helped me in my daily role by teaching me all the practical skills I need to perform my job effectively. I am aware of what I need to do, why I need to do it and how I have to achieve my goals, thanks to the qualification.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are many out of work events that are always advertised through our work communication channels, wether this be sport, calls, meet ups or things to help with. Obviously covid and lockdown has effected this but all of these things have now gone virtual which is a credit to IBM.
