Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

In general my role involves fixing defects that occur and developing new DMPs (Directed Maintenance Procedures) for the department's hardware that we produce. I typically work in a vairety of languages including HTML, Java, C, Perl and Ruby. A typical day would start with the standup at 9AM and finish at 6pm
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the job role, and my on the job work, however the external projects and apprenticeship admin have left much to be desired. The company culture is great, very welcoming and open and i would say that I definitely enjoy working with my team and in my department (however IBM is so large I cannot say that all apprentices will have the same experience)

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During the course of my apprenticeship I have learnt many new skills, both personal and professional. I have significantly imprioved my inter personal communication skills through resources the company has provided. I have significantly improved my develoopment skills as well, thanks to both internal education and external courses as well as practical on the kjob learning
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My Program is theoretically well organised, and with regards to the parts IBM organised it went smoothly, however the external provider was not very good at all, their communication of what would be required and what deadlines I'd have to meet was poor at best. They also favour short term 'intensive' study course to get you through your apprenticeship exams, however I personally found them meaningless as all the information leaves your head within a few days of the course.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer has been fantastic, support is always open and available and they are always happy to give me guidance, or to work towards areas where I can fulfil some requirements that have may have been miscommunicated by the training provider. My Mentor is always supportive and gives me the kick I need to get things done.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider has been for want of a better word, rubbish. Support has been slow and patchy, and obtaining any help beyond, just do it has been like pulling teeth from an angry bull elephant. They seem to have one way of running an apprenticeship and anyone that can't deal with their methods due to any reason just falls out the bottom
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I do not feel that the qualification from my apprenticeship has aided me on my job role at all. If anything it has actively hindered me from becoming a full part of the team and properly contributing. This is due to the way in which they manage the courses and information distribution.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Due to the covid pandemic a lot of extra curricular activity has been put on hold, however when we are able to go into the office, there are a variety of available events and clubs to join, for example there are sports teams, borad game nights, ttrpg groups and a plethora of others

The company is well managed, the culture is friendly and welcoming, they want you to be you and are willing to help you do that and discover who you are.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
Just be yourself. IBM isn't hiring for skills, you're an apprentice for crying out loud. If they wanted someone with a degree, they'd hire a grad. They want the or you, for someone who is passionate about what they do and will fit in with the firm
