I sit within the Technology function of Vodafone Group as a Cyber Security Technologist Apprentice, based in Brentford. My overall responsibility is to work proactively to identify and manage potential threats to Vodafone and our customers. I am able to mitigate risk by taking quick action against potential security threats by conducting relevant investigations, distributing the intelligence to our stakeholders.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my programme as I get exposure and the opportunity to work with many different stakeholders around the business on a day to day basis. I always feel well supported both by my company and training provider, and I always know who I can turn to if I am encountering any issues.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I learned many new skills, primarily around how to write in a concise manner for management reporting. I have also developed my presentation skills and interacting with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. In particular within the role, I have developed a strong understanding of the MITRE ATTACK framework.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

At the beginning of my programme, I did not feel as though it was well structured from a training provider perspective as communication was poor, however a change halfway through the programme occured which has resulted in significant improvements to this. From a company perspective, the programme is well structured and support is always available.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer throughout the programme. There is a whole team dedicated to supporting the companies future talent, and this also caters for social/charity events which help to create an inclusive workplace. Within the team, I am very well supported and I have never encountered someone who has not been willing to help me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

It is down to me to ensure I take the appropriate time each week to focus on my coursework, and my employer is always fully supportive of this and often encourages/reminds me to take the time. I have often reached out to the specialists in the team to cross check work which they are always willing to do.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think it's really useful in adding the wider context to a lot of the activities I work on day to day. For example, I might be working on a specific campaign concerning a specific threat that affects a network component I've not heard of before, however when on the training courses I often find those aspects are covered and builds the bigger picture
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes there are many, and although the COVID situation has reduced face to face contact for obvious reasons, the company has put on many virtual events that encourage professional networking within hours, and to share ideas for the future. Aside from this, in our team, we have a social hour booked every week which is a great way to wind down from a busy day.

Why?
I would definitely recommend Vodafone to a friend because it is a great place to work with great people and strong values. The apprenticeship programme is well structured and is well supported, and whilst working for the company you feel well valued and appreciated of your day to day work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vodafone?
Be yourself, be honest, and be enthusiastic! Even though the virtual onboarding process may seem tough and not as engaging, be confident and be prepared to talk not only about your past experience and what you can bring to the table, but also about yourself as a person and your personal qualities.
