Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role during my placement has been to assist in all areas of the Digital Care team. This means that my day-to-day roles shift dramatically dependent on the workstreams I am apart of. Our main focus as a team and my overall objective is how to shift TOBi (our AI chatbot) towards Agentic AI and how that will look for Vodafone. With this I have worked with data, design and governance of multiple projects which consists usually of creating decks, formatting data and maintaining team alignment towards objectives within weekly alignment sessions.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I have been given plenty of responsibility during my time at Vodafone which has been pivotal to my learnings and growth. I was asked to lead a team of 5 looking at how to shift design in an Agentic TOBi in order to improve user experience. We were able to achieve our deliverables by making a 'UX Guideline towards a shift in Agentic AI' which we have then been able to share with markets to start their progress towards Agentic.
I have also been in charge of the TOBiEverywhere Community Call where I have to find speakers every month to speak about TOBi success within markets and allow a space for markets to share their work and progress.
Within our team day, focussed around growth and looking into the next FY, I was responsible for hosting a session for the rest of the team to do. I hosted a Ikigai workshop that was a huge success and really encouraged everyone to look into both their work and home life objectives to find what really drives and motivates them on a day-to-day basis.
More recently I have taken the responsibility of governing several workstreams. This involves me having regularly alignment meetings with people within my team to ensure that progress towards our shared goals are on track and ensure that everyone is aware of each others day-to-day actions.
I feel very lucky to have been given this much responsibility and has really provided me with such amazing growth opportunities.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I have developed both new skills and strengthened existing ones during my placement in the Digital Care team.
One of the most significant areas of learning has been my understanding of AI, particularly conversational and agentic AI within a large organisation. Through hands‑on involvement in projects such as TOBi and Super Agent, I have developed a practical understanding of how AI solutions are designed, governed, and rolled out at scale. This includes exposure to UX considerations, trust and ethics, stakeholder feedback loops, and the balance between automation and human support. My knowledge of AI has moved beyond theory to understanding how it delivers real customer and operational value.
I have also significantly improved my presentation and public speaking skills. I regularly present updates, insights, and recommendations to a range of stakeholders, including product owners, market representatives, and leadership. This has helped me become more confident when speaking to larger audiences, adapt my communication style depending on the audience, and clearly explain complex or technical topics in a simple and engaging way.
In addition, my placement has given me a much stronger understanding of company behaviour, hierarchy, and organisational structure. Working within a global team has helped me understand how decisions are made across different levels of the business, how cross‑market collaboration works, and the importance of stakeholder management. I have learnt how to communicate professionally with senior stakeholders, navigate governance processes, and work effectively within a matrix organisation.
Overall, this placement has helped me develop a combination of technical awareness, communication skills, and organisational understanding, which I believe will be highly valuable in my future career.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a high level of support and guidance from my immediate team throughout my placement. Team members were always approachable, willing to answer questions, and proactive in providing feedback and direction. This ongoing support played a key role in helping me build confidence, understand my responsibilities, and develop professionally within the role.
At the start of the placement, the initial training week was particularly useful, as it helped me understand the business context and how we as placement students fit into the wider organisation. In addition, the Excel workshop was very beneficial and helped strengthen my data handling and analysis skills, particularly for reporting and tracking work.
However, as an external employee, access to some of the company’s wider learning platforms and formal training resources was limited or not available. While this meant I was unable to fully engage with certain structured training programmes, this was largely offset by the hands‑on learning, shadowing opportunities, and informal knowledge sharing provided by my team.
Overall, the combination of strong team support, a useful onboarding experience, and practical learning opportunities allowed me to gain a great deal from the placement, despite some limitations in access to formal company training.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture and general atmosphere during my placement were very positive and welcoming. The environment felt collaborative and supportive, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, open communication, and shared learning. As a placement student, I felt comfortable asking questions, contributing ideas, and getting involved in discussions, which made it easier to settle into the role and build confidence.
Within the Digital Care team, the atmosphere was professional but friendly, and people were genuinely engaged in their work while remaining approachable. There was a clear culture of knowledge sharing and encouragement, which helped create an inclusive environment despite working across different roles, seniority levels, and global markets.
Overall, the culture felt aligned with Vodafone’s values around collaboration, trust, and continuous improvement, and it created a positive and motivating experience throughout my placement.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Vodafone to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Vodafone
My advice to anyone applying to Vodafone would be to be open, proactive, and willing to get involved. Vodafone offers a lot of opportunities, but you get the most out of the experience if you actively put yourself forward, ask questions, and show interest in the work being done around you.
I would also recommend being curious and adaptable, especially in a fast‑moving digital environment. The business is constantly evolving, so showing enthusiasm for learning new tools, technologies (such as AI), and ways of working is really valuable.
Finally, don’t be afraid to speak up and contribute ideas, even as a placement student. Vodafone has a collaborative culture where input is welcomed, and taking initiative helps you gain more responsibility and confidence throughout the placement.
