Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I monitor performance and compliance of our funding programmes, produce regular dashboards and variance analyses, support the structuring and documentation of our current funding projects, research market trends to inform funding strategy, and prepare briefing notes and presentations for ALCO and Treasury meetings—all while liaising with internal and external stakeholders on liquidity, capital strategy, and deal execution.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, in short there is a culture within NBS to give responsibility to placement students upon development of skills and knowledge. This is partially derived from the small teams and thorough training provided for placement roles.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I’ve enhanced my financial-modelling skills—building dynamic funding and liquidity models—and gained hands-on experience structuring deals. I’ve deepened market-analysis abilities by tracking spreads and investor appetite, and improved data-visualisation and reporting through weekly dashboards. Additionally, I’ve sharpened stakeholder-management and communication skills by coordinating with legal, ratings agencies, and senior management across multidisciplinary funding transactions.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Newcastle Building Society to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Newcastle Building Society
My advice to others would be to prepare for the role that they are applying for to minimise the transition time between the theory of study to the practical application of work life. I would also recommend students try to align their own experiences to Newcastle's company culture to increase their chances of success.
