Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Write code and tests to add functionality or update the core systems used within the company. Utilised TDD and BDD with experience in both front-end and back-end development. I pair with my seniors often to ask questions and complete work which I have less experience with. I attend daily stand-ups and tech huddles, bi-weekly retrospectives, sprint refinement and planning.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. Straight away I was able to take on tickets which the other developers could do. I worked on developing a mobile app for the business, creating screens and dealing with data handling. I worked with core systems to implement new features or upgrade existing ones. I was also put as "on-call" support for an upgrade of one of our systems.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

My placement was split into two teams for each half of the year. For both teams I was assigned a Buddy and I was given a Mentor for the whole year who would be my go-to for any questions. I also had open communication with the person from HR who recruited me, my teams, and anyone in the building I was in

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Really open company culture where I saw that employees are very open to sharing their thoughts - if they do not agree with a decision the SLT made, they felt comfortable to voice their (usually strong) opinions.
Everyone at the company was wonderful, kind and helpful - I believe MO prioritise hiring thoughtful individuals

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement. I met so many people in my department and others. I volunteered at schools, held a CV workshop for my university in collaboration with my company, and more on top of my role as a software engineer. I really enjoyed all the technical work I did with React/React Native/Java.
