Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Complete work relevant to audit and accounts preparation, which may include training or fieldwork depending on the stage of the programme. Audit would involve testing for material misstatements while accounts preparation would require greater focus on liquid movement throughout the financial year. This work would be completed for different managers and teams across the company depending on what projects needed greater support. Some of this work may include working for different departments in the company.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a significant amount of autonomy throughout the internship as I was often required to approach different departments and managers for work if other projects were waiting for different things. In addition, there is a certain expectation that my work be completed to a high standard which requires me to be diligent and focused when completing and checking my work before submitting to a manager. The responsibility was given because of the expectation that the work will be completed well and accurately.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt specifically about the software used at Moore Kingston Smith which is valuable for working within the company. However, what is most valuable is learning the nature of the audit and accounts prep processes and what the desired outcome is and what the methodology is to achieve it. Understanding the goal makes it easier to spot mistakes and learn from ineffective working methods which is valuable to the team and my own skillset.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The support was incredibly valuable throughout the programme. My manager gave great guidance and often put me in touch with others if she lacked work to give me. In addition, she routinely checked in with meetings to ensure I was settling in well. My buddy was also a great help, particularly in the earlier days of the programme when I shadowed her on site conducting an audit. She gave advice with software and general queries and gave me constructive feedback to use going forwards. The people team always offered advice and time and were easy to contact when necessary. Additionally, the training project in week 4 offered really useful insight and Matt did a fantastic job of supporting us in figuring out some of the difficult aspects ourselves.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture in MKS is unlike anything I've seen in any company I have worked at before. I thoroughly enjoy coming into work everyday and I have never had the 'Sunday evening feeling' throughout the programme. Every person I have met has been supportive, generous, interested in me and my development, and endlessly willing to help and support me in learning, working, and maximising my experience while here. The culture at MKS is exemplary and I strongly believe it is a fantastic place to work with the most supportive and welcoming working atmosphere.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Working for MKS has been an absolute privilege and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to develop my skills at such a great company. I am excited by the prospect of returning next year and beginning my professional career here. I am disappointed the internship has come to and end and it really feels as though the programme has gone incredibly quickly. I have learnt a great deal about the field and have experienced more than I could have expected to.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Moore Kingston Smith to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Moore Kingston Smith
I would advise them to work with the people team as much as possible to experience as many different areas of the company. Lunch and learns and even conversations with people from different departments is a great way of learning more about different aspects of working at MKS and really helped me clarify the nature of the company and what career prospects it offers. I was interested in the tax department but realised this was something I wanted to consider returning to in my career after working with the people team to arrange a conversation with a partner, manager, and trainee from tax. It was the best decision I made while on the placement, and even though the conversation was an hour, it helped me determine what career prospects I want to pursue after graduation.
