Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was an Intern in Marine hull for six weeks at Lockton. This meant I was learning about the company, its values and everything involved with corporate risk, and being a broker in my team. Throughout the experience I was tasked with a business unit assignment to complete, and had occasional meetings with my team. In the mornings we often had a talk about various areas of the business for an hour and a half. Fridays were dedicated to our intern project which included 6 people working together towards an innovation project.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes I was. Since I finished my business unit assignment quite quickly, I was tasked with creating endorsements, putting them on PPL and sending them to underwriters. This was a very big responsibility as the work I was doing played a role in making the legal documents which included details about the risk placed and the insured. I had to be careful to ensure they were correct and done properly. Being able to use PPL was also a great opportunity, since I could see in real time how underwrites and brokers interact to create slips.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed the skill of professionalism. As my first proper corporate experience I learned how to be comfortable and confident within such a large company through observation and interaction - and I really enjoyed it! I also developed my social skills. As a people person I thrive around others, but it was interesting to interact and learn from my intern peers, all the way up to the CEO of lockton Europe - and learning how to engage with everyone appropriately and enthusiastically was something I enjoyed learning.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a lot of support when I asked for it, but I was grateful to be trusted to get on with my work independently, and given responsibility for certain tasks. However, when I did need help, guidance or had a question, numerous people made themselves available for as many queries as I had. Everyone was very kind and willing to give up their time, and I feel like I have learned so much from those in my team and other associates.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was wonderful! The emphasis placed on culture was made apparent from day one, and it was one of kindness, support, trust and hard work. These are all important values and something I believe quite unique to a large company. The culture and general atmosphere was a large reason why I enjoyed my time with the company so much: there was such an emphasis on looking after the associates which is incredible.
