Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My tasks included supporting in creating reports of pipeline, revenue results, creating communications, running knowledge sharing sessions, and doing research and creation of slides. At times I worked on client project teams and did other ad-hoc work. Due to the nature of my role, nearly all interactions were internal.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Not very much. I obviously was given tasks to complete, and had to an extent prioritize these and keep up to date on them, but there was not much responsibility.
I never had to lead a team etc, and most of the tasks I had would not have had a business impact if they were late or incomplete.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Through the learning platform I have developed some of my skills, and there is a huge range of courses available. IBM mandates at least 40 hours per year of learning, so there is ample opportunity, and many interns complete more.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Great support and guidance from both a task manager and foundation manager - the task manager is who you report to day-to-day, and we would have catch-ups at least 2x a week even when we weren't working together directly. The foundation manager held group meetings every 2 weeks, and was always available for hr type questions. There's also great resources on the internet to answer basically any question.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very big-company (as expected), so lots of stuff had some convoluted process or took a long time, but also has all the benefits of size and scope that big companies have.
A bit more work-from-home than I'd like, as the office is quite empty any day except thursday, however depends on your service line or account, as many were in office a lot. Good socials in early professionals and other areas.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Overall was enjoyable, with some points that were a bit boring or slow. I would definitely recommend to someone without much work experience or who does not know what consulting or being in a big company is like.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
Make sure you reach out as much as you can beyond your immediate service line/area as there's loads of opportunities you won't get otherwise
