Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Management trainee, working mainly in checking people in/out of vehicles, returning vehicles, learning to manage the vehicles coming in and allocating them eventually as well as marketing for the business to local businesses etc. Job had a heavy focus on sales, selling insurance packages, upgrades etc, as well as a very customer facing role. Long hours at times and lots and lots of driving, great if, like me, you like cars as you get to drive lots of nice cars and being in/out of the office a lot makes the day go faster.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes definitely, aspects of the job would have significant impact on your branch if not done correctly, for example if you dont follow the correct procedures on either spotting damage or raising claims on vehicles coming into your branch, it can leave your branch responsible for very costly repairs etc. Also you get trusted to drive very expensive cars etc and follow correct risk procedures, looking for risk in customers etc, renting out high value assets does mean there is high risk involved so lots of procedures that must be followed correctly.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Definitely, customer service, team work, logistics planning when planning vehicle movements etc, sales tactics and team work, you have to work with a huge team across your whole area, this will differ for everyone in Enterprise in different areas but i was more trusted to help in the management areas ie sourcing and moving vehicles around, so had to gain a network of maybe close to 100 people in other branches to work with to find solutions to vehicle planning.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Everyone has mentors and contacts you are encouraged to contact with any issues, however during my placement we went through two managers, the first was very poor and we all (in our branch) hated the job at times and felt quite alone, however with a new better manager this was not the case so will differ for everyone depending on the manager and branch. I will say area managers and hr reps always make themselves known if you do need help i just feel its right to comment as it was a bad experience i had to begin with even if it did improve

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Company culture is quite competitive and feels like a pyramid scheme at times with the ‘internal promotion’ scheme, where it feels like you have to commit to a few years in jobs within the company which may not be the best in order to get to job roles with better pay and responsibility. We did feel like a good team and a big one at that, everyone always seems happy to help and I will say the business is quite unique so i understand the internal promotion idea as external hires wouldn’t have a clue what to do if they went straight into management roles etc…

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I did really enjoy my placement and have stayed on part time, likely will remain after graduation with the company. I loved being in and out of the office, driving nice cars all day, working with a good team ive made friends with and feeling like a genuinely valued member of the team. It did have its flaws as i mentioned and you do need a good work ethic, the unpredictable nature of the business naturally means you can sometimes work very late or long hours etc which can be annoying, but you also understand thats the business youre in, for example cars are short and someone returns one with damage, you need to find another it may be 60 miles away at another branch etc this happens often… it does mean sometimes work life balance can be hard to manage, difficult to make plans after work if you dont know when youll finish etc, but overall i did really enjoy it. It’s not for everyone, some people in the job didnt like it at all and some were very committed to the company and id struggle to see some of them leave!!!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Enterprise Mobility to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Enterprise Mobility

Be aware that you do need a good work ethic to succeed at this company, happy to work long hours on occasion and not know what time you’ll finish on some days, but it is a fun job, not too difficult but you can challenge yourself with more responsibility. If you like driving nice cars, working within a big team and always having a laugh, being in a customer facing role and having days in/out the office which go by very quickly!!! You will love this job… I did!
