Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
My role gives me a variety of responsibilities within the commercial job family. I am responsible for administrating subcontracts, tracking costs, changes and reporting forecasts. I will go on site with engineers to understand the construction works and track progress to inform payment.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I believe the structure of Balfour Beatty's quantity surveying degree apprenticeship programme is complimentary to the role, allowing great onsite experience which supports studies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have developed measurement and costing, excel, negotiating, contract practice, planning and communication skills. Although I have improved practical skills, it has also given me opportunity to improve personal development skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
Overall structure worked really well. My day-to-day role supported my studies by giving me practical experience, whilst studies were relevant to on site works. Remote university was very beneficial as it gave me a day without travelling, however in person 2 day blocks 3 times a year still made me feel part of the uni and build relations with those on my course.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
Any queries or troubles my employer has supported me to answer. They have made time for any uni commitments and been flexible with working hours and support when I have requested.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
When requested the training provider would always support.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Whilst the course is relevant, I feel on site experience cannot be replicated through studying.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

There are many opportunities to develop and progress and you are encouraged to take these. I have a great team of people who make working easier. The structured training and expertise have given me experience which others in similar roles have not had.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

I would advise them to apply. It is good to prepare and research the company and the works to have an interest in construction.
