Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

Although I have only been with Balfour Beatty for a month, my experience so far has been very positive. I have quickly settled into the role and have had numerous opportunities to learn and develop as a Graduate Project Manager. The colleagues I work with are highly supportive, approachable, and always willing to share their knowledge, which has greatly contributed to my development.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

At present, I support my manager in the delivery of various projects by liaising with suppliers to procure materials, coordinating with subcontractors to ensure work programmes meet client requirements, and monitoring project progress. I am responsible for ensuring that reports and project documentation are completed accurately and kept up to date. I also work closely with other teams across Balfour Beatty to assist with remedial works, organise supplier deliveries, and gather the information needed to support successful project delivery.
The aspect of the role I enjoy most is the variety of responsibilities and the opportunity to work with different teams and stakeholders. This enables me to develop my communication, organisation, and project management skills while gaining a broader understanding of how projects are delivered.

I feel that I have a very good work-life balance in my role. My usual working week is 40 hours across five days, which allows me to maintain a healthy routine and effectively balance my work and personal commitments. After work, I still have sufficient time to relax, spend time with family and friends, and attend the gym, which supports my physical and mental wellbeing.

4/5
My role has exceeded the expectations set during the recruitment process. Throughout the recruitment stages, I was given the impression that I would be supporting meaningful projects and developing my project management skills, which has certainly been the case. In my first month at Balfour Beatty, I have already been given the opportunity to take ownership of certain tasks and manage elements of projects independently. This level of responsibility has helped me develop my confidence and gain valuable practical experience much earlier than I expected.

My advice to anyone applying to Balfour Beatty would be to apply as soon as an opportunity becomes available and not hesitate to put themselves forward.
It is also important to understand the company's culture and values, particularly the principles of being Lean, Expert, Trusted, Safe, and Sustainable, as these are embedded throughout the business and influence the way people work.
Finally, be prepared to demonstrate how your skills, experiences, and achievements can add value to the role you are applying for. Using specific examples from education, work experience, volunteering, or extracurricular activities will help illustrate your capabilities and make your application stand out.
