Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
As part of the Graduate and Early Careers programme, I have been enrolled on numerous training modules that have supported my technical development and professional growth. These programmes, alongside mentoring from experienced colleagues, have helped me build confidence and gain a broader understanding of the construction and engineering industry.
I have also had opportunities to attend industry conferences and networking events, enabling me to learn from leading professionals, stay informed on industry developments, and expand my professional network. These experiences have complemented the practical knowledge gained through my project work.
In addition, Balfour Beatty's commitment to social value has allowed me to participate in volunteering initiatives that positively impact local communities. Taking part in volunteering days has been particularly rewarding, providing an opportunity to contribute beyond my day-to-day role while developing teamwork and leadership skills.
The combination of meaningful project experience, structured training, industry engagement, and community-focused activities has made my time at Balfour Beatty both enjoyable and highly beneficial to my personal and professional development.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The elements I enjoy most are the variety of work and the opportunity to continuously learn. And no two days are genuinely the same, and I have been able to gain experience across a wide range of disciplines, from design reviews and technical assurance to temporary works and construction planning. I particularly enjoy seeing how designs develop and are translated into construction on site, as it provides a real understanding of the end-to-end delivery process.
I have also enjoyed collaborating with experienced colleagues across the project, as this has allowed me to develop both my technical knowledge and professional skills. Alongside my day-to-day responsibilities, the Graduate and Early Careers programme has provided access to numerous training modules, industry conferences, networking opportunities, and volunteering initiatives, all of which have contributed significantly to my development and made my experience at Balfour Beatty particularly rewarding.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
I generally feel valued by my team, with colleagues being approachable, supportive, and willing to share their expertise. I have been given opportunities to take ownership of tasks and contribute to important project outcomes. As I continue to develop in my career, I would welcome further opportunities to take on additional responsibility and become more involved in decision-making, which is why I selected four rather than five stars.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
The wider benefits package adds value, particularly the provision of a company car, the opportunity to participate in share schemes, and access to employee discounts and other benefits. These are appreciated and help to make the overall package more attractive.
That said, I believe there is room for improvement in certain areas. Increased pension contributions and additional annual leave would enhance the overall package and make it more competitive. Whilst I am satisfied with the benefits currently offered, these improvements would better reflect the level of responsibility and contribution expected within the role.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
The Graduate and Early Careers programme has also supported my development through structured training modules, networking opportunities, industry conferences, and volunteering initiatives. These experiences have allowed me to build skills beyond my day-to-day responsibilities and gain a wider perspective on the industry.
I have been given opportunities to take ownership of tasks and learn from experienced colleagues, which has significantly contributed to my professional growth. As I continue to gain experience, I would like further exposure to higher-level decision-making and greater responsibility for project delivery.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
Through my role on the A40 project, I have gained experience in areas such as design coordination, temporary works, technical reviews, stakeholder engagement, and planning and environmental compliance. Alongside this, the Graduate and Early Careers programme has provided access to a range of formal training modules, conferences, and networking opportunities that have supported my professional development.
I now feel that I am continuously building both my technical knowledge and professional skills, and the combination of structured training and practical experience has been highly beneficial. The only reason I did not select the highest rating is that the development opportunities took some time to build momentum during the early stages of the programme.
Experience & Company Culture
How is the support you receive?
The wider team is also highly supportive and willing to share their knowledge and experience. Whether I have technical questions or need assistance with a task, there is always someone available to help. This collaborative environment has made it easier to develop my skills and contribute effectively to the project.
The strong support network within both my immediate team and the wider business has been a key factor in my professional development and overall positive experience at Balfour Beatty.
How is your work-life balance?
There are occasions when I work from the office or project locations and return home later than I would like, particularly when project demands increase. However, I recognise that this is to be expected at times within the construction and infrastructure industry.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
The company also provides opportunities to build relationships outside of day-to-day work through team events, hospitality days, networking opportunities, and volunteering initiatives. These activities help strengthen working relationships and contribute to a positive team environment.

Recommendations & Advice
Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Why?
As one of the UK's leading infrastructure and construction companies, Balfour Beatty is involved in a wide range of major and complex projects. This gives graduates the opportunity to gain exposure to challenging and interesting work that can accelerate learning and professional growth.
I have particularly valued the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and contribute to the delivery of significant infrastructure projects. The variety of work, supportive culture, and opportunities for development make Balfour Beatty a great place to start and build a career in the industry.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Look into some of the company's recent and past projects to understand the scale and variety of work undertaken across the business.
Use the interview as a two-way conversation. Ask questions about the role, the team, the projects you could be involved in, and the opportunities for development and progression.
Find out what exposure and responsibility you may receive, particularly if applying for a graduate or early careers role.
Prepare examples of teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership experiences, as these are often discussed during interviews.
Be yourself and let your enthusiasm show. Employers value attitude, willingness to learn, and potential just as much as technical knowledge.
Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Being overly nervous can make the interview harder than it needs to be.
Remember that interviewers want you to succeed. They are looking to understand your potential and whether you are a good fit for the role.
If you don't know an answer, be honest and explain how you would approach the problem or find a solution.
Stay relaxed and confident. Good preparation is important, but the best interviews often feel like a professional conversation rather than an interrogation.
