Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

My experience at Balfour Beatty has been very positive and rewarding. Working on the A66 project has provided me with valuable hands-on experience across site operations, engineering, project management, and project delivery. I have been given opportunities to take on increasing responsibility, develop my technical and professional skills, and work alongside experienced teams in a supportive environment. Overall, I have grown significantly in confidence and capability and look forward to continuing my development and progressing my career within the business.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

My main responsibilities include coordinating site activities, managing permits and safe systems of work, supporting archaeological and earthworks operations, reviewing engineering drawings, monitoring progress, and liaising with subcontractors to ensure works are delivered safely and efficiently.
The aspects I enjoy most are the variety of the role, solving site-based challenges, and seeing work progress from planning through to completion. I particularly enjoy working with different teams and stakeholders, gaining practical engineering experience, and having the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility while contributing to the successful delivery of a major infrastructure project.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
My role provides a strong opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by the team. I am trusted with responsibilities that directly support project delivery, including coordinating site activities, managing permits, supporting engineering and archaeological works. My input is valued, and I am encouraged to take ownership of tasks and contribute to problem-solving on site.
Working within a supportive team environment has helped me develop professionally while allowing me to make a positive contribution to the success of the project. The trust and responsibility I have been given have increased my confidence and reinforced my sense of value within the team.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
I feel that my compensation package provides a fair level of remuneration for my role as a Civil Engineering Graduate, particularly when considering the wider benefits, development opportunities, and experience gained through working on a major infrastructure project. The support for learning and professional development, alongside the benefits available, adds significant value beyond salary alone. As I continue to take on greater responsibility and develop my skills, I look forward to progressing further within the business and seeing this reflected in my future career development and reward opportunities.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
I feel my role is preparing me very well for my future career. It provides a strong balance of technical, operational, and stakeholder management experience through involvement in a major infrastructure project. I have been able to develop my engineering knowledge, site management skills, and confidence in coordinating activities and working with multidisciplinary teams. The responsibility and exposure I have gained have helped me build the competencies needed for future progression within the industry and towards achieving my ICE professional qualifications.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I would rate this highly. Through both formal training and my day-to-day responsibilities, I have had excellent opportunities to develop new skills and strengthen existing ones. Working on the A66 project has exposed me to site operations, engineering coordination, stakeholder management, permit control, and health and safety processes, allowing me to gain valuable practical experience.
Alongside on-the-job learning, the training and development opportunities available have supported my professional growth and progression towards ICE accreditation. Overall, I feel I am continually developing both technically and professionally, with increasing responsibility helping to build my confidence and capability.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
The support I receive is very good. I work within a supportive team where colleagues and managers are approachable, willing to share knowledge, and provide guidance when needed. I have regular opportunities to ask questions, learn from experienced professionals, and take on new responsibilities with the appropriate level of support. This has helped me develop my confidence, skills, and understanding of the industry while progressing in my role and working towards my professional qualifications.

How is your work-life balance?

1/5
My work-life balance is generally good, and I have flexibility to manage my responsibilities effectively. The team is supportive, and there is a positive culture around wellbeing. However, I believe there are opportunities to improve the employee experience, particularly in relation to access to halal food options on site and greater support for healthy living initiatives, such as gym memberships or wellbeing benefits in the Penrith area. These additions would help promote employee wellbeing and support a more inclusive working environment.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

4/5
The organisational culture at Balfour Beatty is generally positive, collaborative, and focused on safety, quality, and continuous improvement. I have found colleagues and managers to be approachable and supportive, creating an environment where people are encouraged to learn, take on responsibility, and contribute to project success.
The atmosphere within the team is professional and inclusive, and there is a strong emphasis on working together to overcome challenges and deliver results. While the company promotes wellbeing and employee support, I believe there is room for improvement in areas such as providing more accessible halal food options and enhancing wellbeing initiatives related to gym access and healthy living. These improvements would further support employee wellbeing and inclusivity across the workforce.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
I would rate Balfour Beatty's commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility positively overall. The company promotes an inclusive culture where people from different backgrounds are respected and given opportunities to develop and contribute. In my experience, colleagues are supportive, and there is a genuine focus on creating a welcoming working environment.
There are, however, some areas where accessibility and inclusivity could be further enhanced. For example, increasing the availability of halal food options on sites and at company events would help support employees from diverse backgrounds. Additional wellbeing initiatives, such as support for gym memberships and healthy living, would also contribute to a more inclusive and supportive employee experience. Overall, I believe the company is moving in the right direction and continues to make positive progress in these areas.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

4/5
I would rate Balfour Beatty's CSR initiatives positively overall. The company demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting local communities, promoting sustainability, maintaining high safety standards, and creating opportunities for education and skills development. Working on major infrastructure projects has allowed me to see the positive impact these initiatives can have on both communities and the wider industry.
There are also opportunities to further enhance employee-focused initiatives, particularly around wellbeing, healthy living, and inclusive catering options such as halal food availability. Overall, I believe Balfour Beatty takes its social responsibility seriously and continues to make a positive contribution through its projects, people, and community engagement activities.
