Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

I’ve had a really positive experience at Balfour Beatty. I’ve learned a lot in a relatively short time and had opportunities to work across different sites, teams and parts of the project lifecycle. What stood out most was the working environment. Everyone has been approachable, supportive and willing to share their knowledge, which made it much easier to learn, ask questions and build confidence.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

My main responsibilities have involved supporting the delivery of rail and civil engineering projects both on site and through project coordination. I’ve been involved in setting out, drainage investigations, trial holes, retaining-wall monitoring, site documentation, subcontractor communication and supporting project managers with the organisation and delivery of works.
The parts I’ve enjoyed most have been being on site and getting involved in project management. I’ve really enjoyed seeing how projects are delivered in practice, coordinating with different teams and subcontractors, and understanding the commercial side as well, particularly cost analysis. The variety of the role has given me a much broader understanding of how projects come together

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
Despite joining with very little industry experience, I’ve always been given opportunities to shadow, learn and gradually take on more responsibility. Even senior members of the team have made time to involve me in their work and made me feel that my contribution is genuinely valued.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
I’ve been very happy with the overall package, particularly the support with site equipment, training, travel and access to a company car. The team has also been very receptive when I’ve needed additional support, including flexibility to work from home due to my commute.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
The role has given me exposure to a wide range of departments and stages of the project lifecycle, rather than limiting me to one specific area. Being able to work with different teams has helped me understand the wider business and identify where I’d like to develop further.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I’ve had access to a wide range of formal training, including First Aid, PTS and site-specific training across rail, tram and other environments. Balfour Beatty also offers internal development in areas such as soft skills, so I’ve been able to work on both technical skills and areas I personally wanted to improve.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
The support has been very strong; whenever I’ve needed help, people have been willing to make time and support me, often at very short notice. The only difficulty is that, in such a large organisation, wider issues can sometimes take longer to navigate when they fall outside the knowledge of your immediate team.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
Overall, I’ve found the work-life balance very healthy and there has been good flexibility where needed. There are occasional weekend or night shifts depending on project requirements, but these are part of the nature of the work rather than the norm.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
I’ve had a very positive experience with the culture at Balfour Beatty. Everyone I’ve worked with has been approachable, friendly and supportive, which has created a really welcoming working environment.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
There are a wide range of networks, societies and initiatives available, and I’ve found the company very receptive when people raise ideas or concerns around inclusion and accessibility. There is a genuine effort to support individuals and make reasonable adjustments where needed.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
I’ve been really impressed by the number of volunteering, community and early-careers initiatives available. I was also given the opportunity to host a work experience student, which showed how supportive Balfour Beatty is of getting employees involved in wider community and development activities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I think it’s rare to find a company that is this supportive of its employees while also offering so many opportunities to learn, develop and explore different areas of the business.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

4/5
The role matched the recruitment process quite well and gave a realistic impression of the graduate scheme. Naturally, it’s difficult to fully understand the day-to-day role before starting, but there were no major surprises.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

I’d keep the process largely as it is, but having current graduates involved on interview or assessment days is really valuable. Hearing directly from people already on the scheme makes the process feel more relaxed and gives candidates a clearer picture of what to expect.
