Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

My experience so far has been really positive. As a new starter, everyone has been welcoming and helpful, and I have felt supported while getting settled into the role. There has been a lot to take in during my first few weeks, particularly with the different systems, processes and training, but I am looking forward to becoming more involved on site and developing within the role.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As a Graduate Site Engineer, my role involves supporting the engineering team with the day-to-day delivery of works on site. This includes developing my knowledge of setting out, drawings, quality, health and safety and site processes, while working alongside different members of the project team. I particularly enjoy the practical side of engineering and being out on site, as well as seeing how the work being delivered relates back to the drawings and design.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
Although I am still very new to the role, I already feel welcomed and valued by the team. People have been willing to answer questions, explain things and involve me where possible. I am looking forward to taking on more responsibility as I gain experience and become more familiar with the project.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
I feel the overall package is very good for a graduate role. The company car is particularly helpful to me as a site-based employee, alongside the wider range of benefits available. I also value the investment Balfour Beatty makes in graduate development and training, as this will support my progression throughout the graduate programme.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
I feel the role will prepare me well for my future career as it gives me the opportunity to gain practical site experience alongside structured graduate development. I am also able to learn from experienced engineers and other members of the project team, which will help me build both my technical knowledge and confidence as I progress.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I am already developing a range of skills through both the training provided and my day-to-day experience. The initial training is helping me understand Balfour Beatty's systems, procedures and expectations, while being on site is allowing me to build on the engineering knowledge I gained through university. I am particularly looking forward to developing my practical engineering and setting-out skills as I progress.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
The support I have received so far has been really good. Since joining, my manager and the wider team have been very welcoming and have made it clear that I can ask questions whenever I need help. As there is a lot to learn as a new starter, having people around who are willing to explain things and help me get settled has made the transition into the role much easier.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
My work-life balance has been good so far. Being site based does mean having set site hours and travelling to and from work, but I have found the working routine manageable and I am still able to maintain a good balance outside of work.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
My experience of the culture so far has been very positive. The team has been friendly, welcoming and approachable, which has helped me settle in quickly. There also seems to be a strong emphasis on working together and supporting each other, and I have felt comfortable asking questions and getting involved from the start.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
From what I have seen so far, Balfour Beatty places a strong emphasis on equality, diversity and inclusion. As I am still very new to the company, I have not yet had the opportunity to take part in many specific initiatives or events, but the information and training provided during my induction has shown that these are areas the company takes seriously.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
I am still very new to Balfour Beatty, so I have not yet had the opportunity to be directly involved in any CSR initiatives. However, from my induction and what I have seen so far, there appears to be a strong focus on sustainability, the environment and having a positive impact on the communities surrounding projects. I would be interested in getting involved in these initiatives as I progress through the graduate programme.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes, based on my experience so far I would recommend Balfour Beatty. The recruitment process was positive and since starting I have felt very welcomed and supported by the team. There also seem to be plenty of opportunities for training, development and progression, particularly as a graduate.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5
So far, the role has matched what I expected from the recruitment process. I expected a role where I would be able to develop my practical engineering experience while learning from experienced members of the team, and that has been the case so far. I am looking forward to getting more involved in the engineering work on site as I progress.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

I would recommend researching Balfour Beatty and the types of projects they are involved in before applying. During the recruitment process, be yourself and use examples from university, work experience or previous employment to show your skills. I would also recommend asking questions throughout the process, as everyone I dealt with was approachable and more than helpful.
