Graduate Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor Review

Overall, my experience at Balfour Beatty has been extremely positive. As a graduate Health, Safety and Wellbeing advisor as on commencement of starting with the company they have provided more than adequate opportunities for me to develop professionally through courses. From the first day on my project, I have been welcomed by all especially my team. They have given great encouragement and supplied a vast knowledge of their experiences in the Health & Safety industry.

The main responsibilities of my role on the project are surrounding making sure the operations are performed to the Balfour Beatty standards and all work which is taking place lives up to the zero harm standards. In my role I am performing tasks such as site visits/inspections, creating toolbox talks and communicate with the rest of the wider team for projects to be completed safely.

My role gives me plenty of opportunities to contribute proactively. Even though I am a relatively new member to the team I am given just as much opportunity to input my ideas as how to create a positive safety culture within the project. I regularly get encouragement and recognition from my manager and seniors which gives a great sense of value within the company.

I believe my compensation package fairly remunerates the work in which I do for the company. Balfour Beatty provides a competitive salary as well as other benefits which can be acquired for a salary sacrifice. These include buying additional holiday days, private dental care and much more. Company cars are also provided and expenses for work related activities are also paid. If this doesn’t class as being fairly compensated, I don’t know what does.

I feel like this role is preparing me for my future career extremely well. It has given me an opportunity to get a much more in-depth experience as to what goes into being a HSW advisor. As the project I have come on to is such a significant cabling project it is giving me great exposure into how important safety procedures are followed and how important compliance is as a tier 1 construction company. Working for Balfour Beatty is a great opportunity in developing knowledge and grasping how such a large company operates to create lasting results.

The support that I have received while at Balfour Beatty has been very good from the project team and especially my HSW team. The encouragement for development has been great at every opportunity my best interests have always been at the forefront of all decisions.

For me my work life balance has been great, coming from a construction background before this job I knew the hours in which construction operates so there wasn’t a change to my working hours. The benefit I receive is that as I travel in to work every day, I am given the opportunity to work from home one day a week as my line manager is keen to keep my driver risk levels a low as possible in line with one of the companies fatal risks being driving.

The organisational culture within Balfour Beatty is very positive. Everyone has plenty of training opportunities to better understand the values of the company. This is shown throughout the project I’m on because the atmosphere between all the teams is positive which in affect give the opportunities to collaborate well and keep the project moving along.

Balfour Beatty is one of the leading companies for initiatives surrounding diversity, inclusion and accessibility. These are included from the first day you start as they have many different courses what need completing in regarding to inclusion on their academy. They also have mandatory training courses on right to respect which will give employees the knowledge of how to treat all other employees in the correct manner. Other courses are also provided for employees throughout each year to boost knowledge around these subjects.

My role matched expectations based on the recruitment process as when I applied it was a simple process of sending my cv to Balfour Beatty and two interviews were arranged, one on teams and the second was in person at the offices. I discuss a lot what the role would be about in both interview and it met with what I expected.
