Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Geo-environmental specialist normal duties include doing desk work. This involves desk studies understanding the geology of a location , what previous infanstructure / land use was present at the location and how this could further link together to impact the site as a whole . Site works can include core logging , supervision of working , meeting with clients , writing phase 1 and phase 2 forms . Filling out HASP forms for site workings adapting to changes as something may not go to plan on site so be able to think on your feet. Check in meetings for the progress of site works or preliminary site workings.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Responsibility is awarded , with me saying this future interns you do have the chance for this provide that you show you are willing . I personal experience was frequently asking for things to be given or have a chance to look at just so I can further build my confidence up in areas where my knowledge was lacking.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have developed and learnt alot of new skills , technical skills being the use of different software GIS for example and Fulcrum . Understanding technical terminology also has been a large help. Public presentation, collaboration , critical thinking , time management , product management . If I could round up everything I would say I have been able to be exposed to a lot of different business areas within the company and this has helped and pushed me to work on my confidence to come from an angle that I am willing to learn

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I had much guidance during my internship whether through my Line manager frequently checking on me or helping me get into contact with people that can help me with something else , I had a buddy that had gone through what I am doing thus they could provide very valuable insight into challenges I may be facing. In general people in the office were extremely guiding and supportive.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

I believe I have really grown from the moment I stepped in to now as I feel like I have developed a presence in the office with a new updated self image of myself . And this is the result of my experiences in the office , speaking to a vast range of people , learning from them asking questions , getting involved the office has been very welcoming .

Go in with an open mind , and try your best to leave a mark let people remember you for something that you did this could be that piece of work that you did or being sociable in the office . Go with an open mind , look at things from the perspective of what can I learn and how can this help me grow.
