Year in Industry Engineer Review

I worked as a Student Engineer supporting engineers with a range of project work involving carrying out technical calculations, preparing and checking drawings, writing reports, attending project meetings, and assisting with the design and assessment of railway infrastructure.

I was given quite a lot of responsibility during my placement. Many tasks were assigned to me to complete independently, which helped develop my technical and problem-solving skills. Support and guidance were always available when needed, but a lot of the work required personal initiative, learning, and analysis to deliver the required outcomes.

I learnt a range of new software and workplace skills during my placement. The experience was very different from university, so much of the work I completed was completely new to me. I also developed my technical skills, particularly in carrying out engineering calculations, by learning from and working alongside experienced engineers.

I had regular bi-weekly meetings with my line manager to discuss my progress and make sure everything was going well. I also received guidance from other engineers whenever I had questions or needed help with technical tasks, which created a supportive learning environment.

General company culture and atmosphere was good, but office culture and atmosphere was amazing. Everyone was friendly, approachable, and willing to help, making it easy to ask questions, learn from others, and feel part of the team.

I really enjoyed my placement. The team was welcoming and supportive, which made it a great environment to work in. I also enjoyed learning new skills, gaining practical engineering experience, and working on a variety of projects throughout the placement.
