Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I aided in the development and maintenance of a design system. My main priority was working in Figma to build out UI components and pages for a new website. I was involved in note-taking for User Research tests as well.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was responsible for structuring the design system and making sure designs stayed consistent across platforms. I was trusted to work independently but had frequent communication with my line manager to share updates and support development

I've learned a lot about UX/UI design and gained an in-depth knowledge of Figma and other UX software.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Really good! I had regular contact with my managers and team-mates, which meant that I always felt supported during my placement year

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

There was a generally friendly, relaxed atmosphere in the office. However, the work-from-home culture meant that there were limited social opportunities as people generally came into the office once a week, while some colleagues worked fully remote. Despite this I was able to build friendly relationships with my team and fellow placement students.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I feel like it's been a really valuable year for me- I've learned a lot of new skills and gained industry knowledge that I feel will stand me in good stead for my return to university, and for my future career!

What advice would you give to others applying to TUI UK & Ireland

There are lots of opportunities for personal and professional development during the placement year, for example through training and shadowing sessions. This was a great opportunity to branch out into different areas of the business and learn how to operate in different roles. These opportunities are generally optional so make sure you put yourself out there and get involved!
