Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked in the Highways and Drainage Department. I would analyse existing roads to identify opportunities and challenges towards implementing active travel, alongside constructing reports based upon my findings. Additionally, I would use AutoCAD and Civil 3D to create 3D models of carriageway systems, including profiles and cross-sections to enhance clarity for clients viewing the model.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I would work on drafts for reports and models that would be handed to clients after they had been checked and edited by more senior colleagues.

I have learnt lots of skills, including technical engineering software, time management, Microsoft 365 and Excel capabilities, AI and technical analysis of highway systems.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I would have bi-weekly to weekly teams meetings with my line manager, and have been able to contact her and my head of department as needed when requiring support. Additionally, my senior colleagues were more than happy to provide help with tasks I did not fully understand.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere was very laid back and friendly, whilst still meeting deadlines and getting work done. There were regular events held to encourage the office to socialise, and benefits to coming into the office such as free treats.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the flexibility of Arcadis' timesheet system, and whilst I would have liked to have more opportunities to get involved in projects, I very much liked the work I was a part of!
