Student Engineer Review

As a placement student at Arcadis, I support a variety of water and infrastructure projects by creating and updating 3D models and technical drawings, assisting with calculations and documentation, and preparing construction-ready designs. I regularly collaborate with engineers, project managers, and suppliers, and have gained practical experience through site visits and environmental monitoring. My role also involves continuous learning through training, mentoring, and adapting to feedback, helping me develop both my technical and professional skills within a real project environment.

During my time at Arcadis, I have learned new technical skills such as 3D modelling in Revit and Civil 3D, interpreting and producing construction-ready drawings, and using platforms like Autodesk Construction Cloud and SWWIM for project management. I’ve also gained experience with site visits, environmental monitoring, and applying engineering calculations like flowrate analysis. At the same time, I’ve developed existing skills in teamwork, time management, communication, and problem-solving by balancing multiple projects, collaborating with colleagues, and responding to client feedback. My confidence and ability to take on responsibility have also improved through mentoring others and leading aspects of project work.

I received a strong level of support and guidance during my placement at Arcadis. From the start, my line manager and colleagues were approachable and willing to answer questions, whether about technical challenges, project processes, or company procedures. I had regular opportunities to seek feedback, join meetings, and learn from more experienced engineers, CAD technicians, and project managers. Whenever I was given new responsibilities such as developing construction-ready drawings or visiting sites, there was always someone available to provide advice or review my work. I also benefited from structured training sessions, mentoring opportunities, and open communication within the team, which made it easy to ask for help and learn throughout my placement.

The company culture at Arcadis has been welcoming, supportive and collaborative. From my first day, colleagues across different teams made an effort to include me, answer my questions and help me settle in. The atmosphere is professional but friendly, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, diversity and mutual respect. There’s a clear focus on learning and development and people are happy to share their knowledge and provide feedback. Social events and regular team meetings also make it easy to connect with others and feel part of the wider Arcadis community. Overall, it’s a positive environment where everyone is encouraged to contribute and grow.

I really enjoyed my placement at Arcadis. The variety of projects I worked on kept things interesting and helped me learn a lot in a short time.
