Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

During my placement at Hilton as a US Banking Intern based in Glasgow, I supported the finance function across a portfolio of US properties, with a primary focus on bank reconciliation and financial accuracy. My role involved reconciling general ledger bank accounts, investigating and resolving variances, and ensuring transactions were recorded correctly in line with month-end deadlines. I regularly analysed discrepancies such as missing or incorrectly posted payments, working closely with on-property teams and finance colleagues to resolve issues efficiently. I also used systems such as BlackLine alongside advanced Excel tools to manage reconciliations, track outstanding items, and maintain clear audit trails. In addition, I played a role in supporting Hilton’s internal control framework by ensuring compliance, improving accuracy, and helping to mitigate potential financial risks, while developing strong professional communication through cross-functional collaboration.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Hilton has a very positive and relaxed working culture, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, support, and work-life balance. Despite working in a fast-paced finance environment, the atmosphere is approachable and friendly, where colleagues are willing to help and collaboration is encouraged. This made it easy to build relationships across teams and feel comfortable asking questions, while still maintaining high professional standards and delivering on responsibilities.
