Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The two days gave a good insight into the firm as a whole as it covered a variety of different practice areas. The first day consisted of various talks and workshops such as an introduction to ESG within the firm and a negotiation workshop. There was also a social event in the evening. The second day we were each assigned to a department and a trainee to shadow. We completed some basic tasks as part of that.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
The workshops and talks on the first day in particular gave a great overview of the business as a whole as well as more detail on certain practice areas. A particularly informative and useful exercise was the 'speed-networking' session where we had the opportunity to talk to someone from each of the firm's practice areas. There was also a lot of information provided by the graduate recruitment team and trainees about what the next steps were in our applications.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I learnt negotiation skills as part of the negotiation workshop including what to think about prior to a negotiation and how best to get a deal that you are happy with at the end. Also developed my ability to summarise information clearly and concisely as well as effectively simplifying more complicated concepts for an audience that is not familiar with the subject matter. Additionally learnt how to present information in different ways depending on its intended purpose.

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
4/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone at the firm I met was really friendly and seemed really happy to talk to all of us on the scheme and answer any questions we had. The evening social event was also a great opportunity to talk to a variety of people from the firm at all different levels of seniority in a more relaxed environment. Overall, it appeared that the firm had a supportive culture and thus employees felt happy working there.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the spring insight scheme. I felt I learnt a lot about the firm and gained an idea of what it would be like to work as a trainee there. I appreciated the effort that had gone into organising a wide ranging and informative set of events for us over the two days. I felt that the social event we had was also a great opportunity to get to know the other students on the scheme.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Simmons & Simmons LLP
Research the firm and the practice areas that they are particularly strong in/focus on. Also have a look at the kinds of assessments and tests you will have to sit as part of the application process and practice them as much as possible so that you are familiar with the format and the type of questions that come up. Also practice speaking to a camera and recording yourself in preparation for the recorded interview.
