Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
At the start of the week, I would be introduced to the department and my supervisor, who would provide an overview of the practice area. I would then complete tasks which my supervisor/trainee buddy or wider team would set. This ranged from research tasks to producing transaction summaries. These tasks would be balanced against attending insightful talks, such as Intro to Pro Bono, alongside attending client calls/meetings. The week provided a good overview of the types of work you might be involved in, but mostly I think it’s about getting a feel for the Firm and the people you may end up working with.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
We received various talks on how Simmons works as a law firm and business. The Head of Global Practice Management also ran a session for a small group of us to talk us through how law firms function, which was incredibly insightful.

I developed my time management skills, by balancing multiple tasks at once. I also developed commercial awareness, attention to detail, communication and resilience.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture was really great. Both my supervisors and trainee buddies were very welcoming and friendly. Everyone I met on the vacation scheme, in various areas and across different seniority levels were friendly, engaging and genuinely charismatic and interesting to talk to!

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the two weeks. I gained invaluable experience and met some people that I developed strong connections with. It made me realise the firm I would like to work for and encouraged me to continue my legal career.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Simmons & Simmons LLP
When doing the video interviews, I would go through all potential questions they may ask, focusing on their practice areas and your motivation for the firm. On the assessment centre, it is important to be commercially aware and also show enthusiasm for the firm.
