Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As an Assistant Digital Engineer in Design & Engineering, I capture, validate, and structure engineering and project data to ensure it is accurate and consistent across major projects. I also carry out data analysis and develop dashboards and reports using Power BI and Python, turning complex technical and performance data into clear, actionable insights for engineers, managers, and programme teams. Through this work, I support performance monitoring, sustainability metrics, and informed decision‑making across the business.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I’ve always enjoyed working with data. Even in my TSP administration role, I was naturally drawn to creating reports and exploring data quality issues. This role has taken what I’m genuinely passionate about and turned it into my everyday work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learnt a lot of new skills and further developed the knowledge I already had. I always had a strong understanding of Excel, which has now increased significantly, and I can now use Python programming and DAX within Power BI. I am also developing my knowledge of cyber security and IT infrastructure, and my skills continue to grow as I build on this experience.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
At the start of the programme, the organisation and structure were limited as it was newly established. However, as the programme has progressed, both the organisation and overall structure have improved significantly.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
My line manager has been absolutely exceptional throughout this entire process. He has supported me at every stage, from planning and execution through to helping me practise my presentations. His knowledge is extensive, and I know I can confidently approach him with any questions or challenges.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
Some tutors are very attentive and consistently follow through when providing support. Others are extremely busy and tend to direct you towards relevant reading instead. Overall, it is a mixed experience, as everyone works differently. I’ve learnt that it’s important to understand how you learn best and to make effective use of the support and resources available to you.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
I have rated this as a 4 because, although I have learnt a great deal over the past couple of years, I still have much more to learn. I see this as an ongoing journey, and I know I am not finished yet.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes that is all available

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I have always been a huge fan of Balfour Beatty. It offers everything you could want for a positive working life, both professionally and personally. The people are incredible respectful, kind, caring, and genuinely supportive. When I was going through the most difficult time of my life after being diagnosed with breast cancer, the level of support and care I received meant more to me than I can ever express and will stay with me always.
The staff are also highly knowledgeable and hardworking, and I would not hesitate to recommend Balfour Beatty both as an employer and as an organisation to work with.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

Communication is essential. We encourage open dialogue about any topic, as we are always willing to listen, collaborate, and support others; whether that involves sharing ideas, offering help, or working together to find solutions.
