Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
My role as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor predominantly involves supporting the commercial management of construction projects. This includes assisting with cost control, procurement, reporting, and contract administration. My monthly responsibilities involve managing subcontractors, assessing applications for payment, raising early warnings and compensation events, compiling applications for payment to the client, and attending progress meetings. I also support forecasting activities and CVRs. Alongside my role, I attend college once a week to gain practical knowledge that I can apply directly to my role.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I really enjoy the apprenticeship programme as it allows me to apply what I learn academically directly to my day‑to‑day role. The combination of practical experience and structured learning has helped me develop professionally and build confidence in my abilities. I value the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues while progressing towards a recognised qualification.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Before starting my role, I had very little knowledge of quantity surveying. Through the apprenticeship programme, I have learned a wide range of new skills and developed existing ones, supported by both work experience and college learning. This is reflected in achieving a distinction in my Level 4 HNC, and I am now looking to progress onto a degree apprenticeship, showing how effective the programme has been for my development.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
I find the programme very well organised and structured. The balance between college learning and on‑the‑job experience is clear and manageable, allowing me to apply academic knowledge directly to my role. Clear expectations, regular reviews, and consistent support from both my employer and training provider have helped me stay on track and progress confidently throughout the apprenticeship.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I have received continuous support from my employer throughout the apprenticeship. My manager and colleagues are always available to provide guidance, answer questions, and offer feedback. I am encouraged to develop my skills, attend college, and take on new responsibilities, which has helped me grow in confidence and progress effectively within my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I received a high level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They provided clear guidance on coursework, assignments, and assessment requirements, and were always available to offer feedback when needed. Regular check‑in calls were arranged with both myself and my line manager, which helped to monitor progress, address any issues, and ensure I remained on track alongside my work commitments.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel that my level 4 HNC qualification has supported me significantly in performing my role more effectively. The learning provided practical and relevant knowledge that directly links to my day‑to‑day responsibilities, helping me better understand commercial processes, contracts, and cost management. Applying what I learnt through my training provider to real project situations improved my confidence, competence, and overall performance at work.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are extra‑curricular activities available to get involved in at work. I have taken part in several social impact initiatives, including school outreach events where I provided insights into the construction industry. I have also attended networking and charity events, including supporting WaterAid by taking part in a charity boat race. Involvement in these activities has helped me develop additional skills, build relationships across the business, and gain a broader understanding of the organisation.
