Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I work in the waste treatment design team, as a civil engineer apprentice. My team designs assets in sewage treatment sites. Civil engineering applies to many parts of the design process, including drawing site layouts, structural analysis, hydraulics through water pipes etc. Day to day I work in the office contributing to design projects, such as increasing treatment capacity at a site or reducing storm spills by implementing strategies such as storage tanks.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I enjoy my day to day role as it is really exciting to work on real life projects that will make a difference. University is very interesting, my favourite module so far has been Structures, which has involved lots of maths that I enjoy. The apprenticeship is also great for meeting lots of people.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have definitely improved skills such as presenting through my developing confidence, as often in my role I have to talk to people about the work that I have completed, or present in team meetings. I have also so far definitely improved my IT skills, as I have been exposed to a range of different software and can now use software tools to carry out my role, such as drawing designs on autocad.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
I have a structured schedule with university one day a week and the other 4 days in office. I have a full training programme to refer to so I can see what modules I will be completing next at university.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I get lots of support, including extra time to study if I need to for university exams or assignments. My manager often checks up with me to see how I am getting on with my programme and to see if I need any more support.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
The lecturers have been really good at making sure we understand the content of modules for the exams and assignments.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
Much of the content so far has been relevant to my role. The construction materials module was helpful because it involved aspects of construction design management and health and safety which is very important to a designers role, and also learning about materials helped me to understand why certain materials were being chosen in our designs at work. I think when I complete the autocad and the hydraulics module at university they will really help me in my work, as I have seen that a lot of other civil engineers in my team work on hydraulic models often.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
There has been a few social events for apprentices and graduates since I have joined my team, which was a really good time to spend with colleagues both in my team and from other teams. There are sports events organised often, and there is another new talent social event being planned, for which a form was sent to all of us to ask our opinions for what we would most enjoy for this event.
