Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

3/5
Has changed quite a lot since I’ve been here, but at the minute it is electrical design for water treatment

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

2/5
The course is very new so lots of uncertainty. Wouldn’t say the degree and title matches role very well.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Yes learnt lots of new skills that weren’t obtained at school.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

2/5
In terms of the company there is not a lot of structure. Has got better recently but majority of apprenticeship was unstructured. No specific apprenticeship based targets, no scheduled rotations to get required experience. Unclear what final role will be after completion of apprenticeship. Uni has also struggled slightly but has majorly improved.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

2/5
Manager has always offered lots of support and tried to find opportunities. Had practically no communication with the apprenticeship team - unclear objectives thinking of when I come off the apprenticeship - what skills do I need to obtain each year as I progress to be of best use to Severn Trent?

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
Uni have always been willing to help, improving.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

1/5
I wouldn’t say there is much correlation which did cause frustration for some time. Not really able to exercise newly learned skills in the workplace which has lead to more difficulty when trying to understand new concepts.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?

No

Why?

In terms of company culture it is very good, lots of benefits for working here and very positive low stress work atmosphere. But wouldn’t recommend an apprenticeship due to the lack of structure and lack of engineering exposure that I expected when i joined.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?

Display how you can work in a team well, big emphasis on collaboration.
