As a Driver Standards Manager, my primary responsibility was to oversee the welfare of our drivers, including trainees. I served as the main point of contact for various matters, including health-related issues, human resources inquiries, and training schedules for new trainees, including auditing of their files. My role was essential in ensuring a supportive environment for our team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I learned everything I needed to know about the business, including resourcing, rostering, and driver depots. This gave me a 360-degree view of the company and where I think my skills would be more useful.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During my early management experience, I gained good insights into leadership and the intricacies of organisational dynamics across various contexts. This opportunity allowed me to improve my interpersonal skills while simultaneously deepening my understanding of the railway sector. Overall, it was a significant learning journey that broadened my perspective on both management practices and industry knowledge.

It was well-spaced and organised, which gave me enough time to complete my assessments on time. The off-the-job training also allowed me to apply what I have learned.

I felt really supported with both my studies and even when I was going through personal troubles.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider was really supportive and attentive. They were always available when I needed any adjustments, especially as someone who has dyslexia. There was a good mixture of both face-to-face and online learning.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I am applying everything I learned in college because the apprenticeship is directly related to what I do.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are great opportunities at GWR, ranging from HR and operations to customer service. There is something for everyone. You will also get to work with people from all walks of life, and you wouldn't want to leave... truly.
