Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

After working at the charity for a few years, I was given the opportunity to complete a level 5 management apprenticeship. This is in addition to my day to day role, to enhance it and develop my skills and so the work of the organisation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I’m really enjoying the apprenticeship, far more than I expected! After spending a couple of years in my new career path, being offered this opportunity felt like the right next step, even though returning to structured learning after many years was a big decision. I’m glad I took it. I’m gaining new skills and confidence through the programme, and I’m already able to apply what I’m learning in ways that add real value to the team.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I’ve developed a huge amount through the apprenticeship both by putting language and structure around knowledge I already had, and by learning new methods that have genuinely improved the way I work. The project work has been an outstanding development tool for me, giving me space to explore ideas in depth while also bringing a wealth of fresh thinking back into the team. It’s something I hope to continue long after the apprenticeship ends.
The tools and approaches I’ve learned have already helped me review and improve our BAU processes more effectively, and they’re giving me the confidence to support and train others in the team as well. The programme has also introduced me to parts of the organisation I hadn’t previously worked with, and I’ve been able to bring colleagues from those teams in as expert speakers to broaden our collective learning even further.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme has been extremely well organised and structured. The apprenticeship team has worked closely with the provider to tailor the content to our organisational values, and those values run clearly throughout the learning. It’s easy to see how each part of the programme links back to them.
The work has been laid out in a really accessible way, with clear guidance on structured learning, suggested off‑the‑job activities, and a straightforward view of where we are in the process and what’s still to come. Now that I’m approaching the final project, I can really see how all the different elements fit together and build towards this point. It feels cohesive, intentional, and genuinely well thought through.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

My managers have been very encouraging, ensuring I have protected time to complete my apprenticeship work and the space to explore ideas and suggestions. They have been actively interested in the outcomes of the apprenticeship work and enthusiastic about its wider implications for the team.
Beyond the day to day support, the apprenticeship team has gone above and beyond what I expected. Alongside the standard guidance and resources, they’ve put real thought into what will help us succeed - from arranging additional sessions tailored to our needs, to listening to feedback and acting on it, to checking in regularly to make sure we have the right support at the right time. It feels like a genuinely invested and well supported experience.

The training provider has been consistently supportive and understanding throughout the programme. They’ve taken the time to alleviate any concerns and have always made it clear that they’re available for questions at any point. What I’ve really valued is how they check in regularly - not just on the learning content, but on the practical elements of completing an apprenticeship, such as off‑the‑job hours and the EPA. They’ve offered different approaches where needed and created an environment that feels genuinely inclusive. The support has felt thoughtful and responsive.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification has had a really positive impact on how I perform in my role. It’s given me a clearer framework and language for things I was already doing instinctively, which has made my work more structured and intentional. I’ve also learned new methods and approaches that I can apply directly to my day‑to‑day tasks, helping me analyse situations more effectively and make better‑informed decisions.
I said about the project work being beneficial - it’s allowed me to explore ideas in depth, test new ways of working, and bring fresh thinking back into the team. I can already see how the tools and knowledge from the qualification are helping me improve processes, support colleagues, and contribute more confidently to wider discussions. It’s strengthened both my capability and my impact in the role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

With all working remotely, across three nations, it can be challenging to have the same social opportunities you have in an office. However, a lot of effort goes into ensuring we still have that sense of connection. From active Teams chats (including the occasional meme competition) to virtual coffee breaks, walking challenges, and even music league competitions, there are plenty of ways to get involved. These activities genuinely help us feel close as a team, and when we do meet in person, it never feels awkward or disconnected as the relationships are already there.

Yes
Why?
I have been very fortunate in my previous roles, working with some fantastic people - many of whom I remain friends with today - but this organisation is on another level. The teams across the organisation are genuinely lovely: friendly, passionate about what they do, and always approachable. People work incredibly hard while still looking out for one another, and that creates a culture that feels both supportive and inspiring.
I believe wholeheartedly in the organisation’s goals and the work we deliver, it has real impact and value that is changing people's lives so easy to be passionate about it! It’s the staff, volunteers, and supporters who make it truly special to work here though. It’s a place I would, and have recommended to a friend.

My advice to anyone who wants to work here is to come in with genuine enthusiasm for the work we do. If you care about the mission, it shows - and it makes the role even more rewarding. This is an organisation where people are truly driven by purpose, so letting that passion come through is a real strength.
I’d also say: be open, collaborative, and ready to get involved. It’s a place where people support one another, share ideas freely, and look out for the team as a whole. Showing that you value that kind of culture will help you fit in naturally.
