Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I design electrical services within the built environment, this includes lighting, power, life safety services, mechanical plant power and the infrastructure that powers these such as generators, UPSs and transformers. Depending on the project and RIBA stage depends one what I do each day, but I spend my time undertaking calculations, marking up drawings, completing site surveys, report and schedule writing, researching and finding solutions to problems and queries as they occur from estimation or site teams.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed this degree training programme. Although i specialise in electrical design, as this was a building services design engineer degree, there were some mechanical only modules. Whilst not strictly relevant to me, they were very interesting and gave a valuable insight that has enabled me to have mechanical conversations with other designers and TSMs
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Throughout the course a lot of skills were developed further and some new ones developed. Simple things such as learning about automated functions that are available within the Microsoft Office software that make reports and tables look more professional. Researching techniques and how to reference these in reports has been used many times since. Group projects have helped develop team work further and with many presentations now given, my public speaking skills improved.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The University Course was reasonably well structured although there were times where I felt that some topic did not have enough background taught before going into the advanced theory. I was fortunate to have an electrical background so understood things like fault loops before the fault analysis classes. With regards to recording the off the job training, this could have been much better. our year group went through 3 different platforms for recording this evidence (Arranged by the university apprentice team) and at one point we did not have a platform/portal access for over a year.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Bancroft provided me with as much support as I needed. My mentor was always available discuss theories and work based learning outcomes. Often putting me forward for unusual projects to ensure that I gained a broad spectrum of experience to put my new skills and knowledge into practice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The university provided as much support as I needed. Tutors were always happy to answer any questions I had about content or assignments. Although the communication from the apprenticeship team was good, there were sometimes mixed messages, particularly around the recording of 'off the job training'
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The Qualification has defiantly provided me with a good understanding of a wide range of Building services. This in turn has been useful in being able to be a design lead on some projects. Additionally this has enabled me to register as an Incorporated engineer. A recognised industry standard.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are some social events planned throughout the year. including Christmas parties, Christmas meals. This year Bancroft are organising a family fun day as part of their 30th year celebrations.

Why?
Working within the Design and CAD department is enjoyable. There is a good hard working culture that suits my work ethic. I found that support is available from everyone, no matter what the question, someone will be able to help.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bancroft Ltd?
Go for it, work hard, ask lots of the right questions.
