Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
My role as a Content Developer involves creating and reviewing digital learning content for apprenticeship programmes. I design learner‑focused, engaging and accessible materials that meet apprenticeship standards and regulatory requirements, including ESFA and Ofsted expectations.
On a day‑to‑day basis, my responsibilities include designing and developing engaging digital learning content for blended and face‑to‑face programmes. I generate ideas for how content can be delivered in more engaging and effective ways, using digital tools and current learning technologies. I also produce and edit learning assets, including multimedia and visual content, and work with colleagues when design support is needed.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I enjoy the Digital Learning Designer apprenticeship as it links directly to my job role. I started the apprenticeship at the same time as starting in my role, and at that point everything was relatively new to me. I had limited knowledge and skills, which made the learning feel particularly valuable.
Initially, my understanding of successful digital content was mainly focused on being visually appealing and interactive. However, as I worked through the apprenticeship modules, I was introduced to learning theories and technologies that helped me see content design in a much wider way. I learned that effective learning is not just about visuals and interactivity, but also about understanding how people learn, and how content should be designed to meet learners’ accessibility and learning needs.
This learning has significantly increased my confidence and satisfaction, as I can clearly see my knowledge, skills and behaviours developing over time. Being able to apply what I learn directly to my role has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of the programme.
Another key factor in my enjoyment of the apprenticeship is the support network around me. Having this level of support has been important for both engagement and motivation. My line manager is always involved in calls with the training provider and has a strong understanding of the apprenticeship standards. This has played a vital role in allocating me relevant projects that allow me to apply my learning and develop the required skills and behaviours.
As a result, I feel that the time and effort I put into the programme is worthwhile, as I can clearly see my progress. Having a mentor who has completed the same apprenticeship has also been extremely valuable, especially when things have felt challenging, as they have been a reliable source of guidance and support.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
In addition to developing my knowledge of learning theories and learning technologies, I have also developed new digital and technical skills. Before starting the programme, my skills were mainly limited to basic PowerPoint use. Throughout the apprenticeship, my digital and IT skills have developed significantly. I am now familiar with a wide range of software used to create interactive and engaging digital learning content, and I actively use these tools in my role.
I have also developed my understanding of rights and permissions when creating content, including copyright and organisational policies that must be followed when referencing or using external materials. I have gained a better understanding of how branding plays a vital role in ensuring the content created reflects and represents the organisation appropriately.
Alongside this, I have been building my skills in effective script writing, creating branching scenarios, and designing assessment activities that check understanding and support learner progress. I have also developed skills in researching and using advanced technologies such as AI, and I am now confident in creating learning content that meets WCAG 2.2 accessibility requirements.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
I found the programme to be well organised and clearly structured. It offers a good mix of learning activities and opportunities, including development days, additional resources, live sessions and regular coaching sessions. I also found the social interaction through Slack and the opportunity to communicate with other apprentices to be very valuable.
At the beginning of the apprenticeship, I found some of the concepts covered in the modules challenging to understand. This was mainly because I was new to the role and had little previous experience in digital learning. As I progressed through the programme and gained more experience in my role, these concepts started to make more sense. Over time, what initially felt difficult became a valuable source of knowledge that I now apply in my work.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
An apprenticeship can be challenging without the right support from the employer, however I have never felt this during my programme. My line manager has supported me from day one, taking the time to explain what I needed to know and ensuring I understood both my role and the apprenticeship requirements. I was also allocated a mentor who supports me consistently throughout the programme.
Both my line manager and mentor have a strong understanding of the apprenticeship standards, which has meant I have always had clear guidance on what would be suitable evidence for my portfolio. They also allocate me projects and tasks that align with what I am learning and what is expected within the standards, allowing me to apply my knowledge and develop the required skills and behaviours.
Although we work in a fast‑paced environment and the workload is often heavy, I am always given dedicated study time. In reality, the whole week is a learning opportunity that supports my apprenticeship. I am very grateful for the level of support I have received so far from both my line manager and mentor.
In addition to this, I receive wider support from the organisation. This includes access to apprenticeship ambassadors who provide guidance, reassurance and shared experience, particularly helpful when navigating challenges during the programme.
The Early Careers Team are also very supportive. They attend gateway meetings, support with mock assessments and EPA preparation, and organise networking events and National Apprenticeship Week activities.
The organisation also offers the opportunity for us to register a corporate member of the Association of Apprentices, which provides access to additional resources, guidance and a wider apprentice community. This further strengthens the support available throughout the apprenticeship.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a high level of support from my training provider. My skills coach has been a great support throughout the programme and is always available when needed through multiple communication channels, including Slack, email and calls. Response times are quick, and I receive regular, constructive feedback. I am also supported with a wide range of learning resources that help me further develop my knowledge, skills and behaviours.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel that the qualification supports me strongly in performing better in my role. The learning links directly to my day‑to‑day tasks, which means I can apply what I learn straight away rather than it staying theoretical. The modules have helped me understand not just how to create digital learning content, but why certain design decisions are made, based on learning theories, accessibility requirements and best practice.
As a result, I feel more confident in my role and more purposeful in the work I produce. The qualification has helped me improve the quality of the content I create, work more independently, and better meet both learner and organisational requirements.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes, there are extra‑curricular activities available, including networking events, apprenticeship‑focused activities and volunteering opportunities. My employer also offers additional development courses, such as AI‑related training, which are beneficial to my role and support my continuous professional development.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Pearson to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes, I would 100% recommend Pearson Plc to a friend. I have been working for the company for the past six years in different roles and have always had opportunities to progress and develop. During this time, I have gained three qualifications, including a Level 5 CMI qualification, and I am currently completing the Level 5 Digital Learning Designer apprenticeship. These opportunities have supported my development and helped me progress my career within the organisation.
The support network around me, from peers through to senior management, has always been encouraging. I have consistently felt valued, and this has been shown through different recognition programmes used across the organisation. There are also many opportunities for career progression and changes through internal vacancies. Being able to change my career path and continue developing without needing to leave my employer has been very important to me and has had a positive impact on my motivation and long‑term development.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pearson?

I would advise others to make the most of the development opportunities offered through their role, as these can really help build skills and support progression within the company. Being open to learning and taking advantage of training and qualifications can have a big impact on long‑term career growth.
I would also encourage people to share ideas and not be afraid to step up. New ideas are welcomed and valued, so speaking up and suggesting improvements is always encouraged. Using the support available, such as line managers, mentors and internal networks, is also important, as these can help guide development and provide reassurance when things feel challenging. Overall, having a positive attitude and being willing to learn makes a big difference.
