Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
My role involves testing potable water samples from across Severn Trent's network - performing microbiological analysis to check for potential sources of contamination and allow the business to react.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
My day-to-day is varied, and the wider progression and development opportunities through my university study and networking across the business challenge me to develop skills wider than the core technical skills required to perform analyses.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
I have developed my ability to manage my own time and ensure that many processes run smoothly to ensure representative results are produced from analysis. I have also developed my ability to manage stakeholder relationships and work closely with both internal customers and regulators.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

3/5
The programme is in its infancy so I have helped to co-create a training timeline that is most beneficial for students entering the workforce with no prior lab experience.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
I am incredibly well supported to achieve both at work and in my studies - the pastoral support from the New Talent team has also been invaluable during a period of significant change in my life.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
Manchester Metropolitan University support their degree apprentices through week-long laboratory residentials to allow students to develop a wide range of laboratory skills alongside the theoretical understanding of the experiments carried out.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Due to the highly regulated nature of my role, and therefore the narrow scope of testing, my degree provides a much wider technical basis than is required to succeed in my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
There are opportunities to be involved in Community Champion Volunteering Days and DILO (Day in the Life Of) days with other teams, alongside a range of clubs run through Severn Trent's Club Hub.
