Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
Investigation and extrapolation of information from Construction Drawings.
Consult relevant parties and collate a bill of quantities and begin preparing works.
Conduct site visits to check on works.
Set out any engineering control required.
Instruct Sub-contractor.
Check and ensure sub-contractor is laying as per design and specification.
Make a formal record of this in an Inspection Test Plan, and Site Diary.
Collate quantities and outputs delivered, compare this to initial programme and bill of quantities; sign joint agreed end of shift / visit with sub-contractor and review with senior colleagues.
Collate all quality assurance from the works delivered and compile into a quality record package ready for submission to Client.
Show and escort other apprentices my daily activities.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
Amazing support and confidence from management and senior colleagues.
Trusted on site to deliver work load, support there if required. Encouraged to take the extra step with full backing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
All aspects to do with Civil Engineering, i was previously a bartender prior.
Skills include:
Teamwork, Co-ordination, setting out / engineering control, commercial and procurement and many more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
Plenty of opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge with several structured secondments.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
As mentioned before, despite being an apprentice and 'bottom of the food chain' some would say, I am treated fairly and receive the same respect and treatment as a director, there is no discrimination between ethnicities or career level.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

3/5
Block release week away from work to study.
Heavily demanding on top of work responsibilities along with a large class often makes it difficult to ask questions.
Luckily at work they allow me time here and there to complete assignments / revise for exams.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
Degree in Civil Engineering is heavily linked towards my role at Balfour Beatty. The degree enables me to have a level of knowledge in all areas of Construction not only Civil Engineering which can be applied everywhere including outside of work.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Several professional networking events occur every year and each colleague is encouraged to attend or contribute towards. There are also several social activities and sports activities every year between departments and is an absolute laugh and a good chance to bond with your fellow colleagues.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Immense support and opportunity, feels as though it is a family at times rather than an employer.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

I would strongly recommend being yourself when applying to Balfour Beatty, every person/culture/opinion/thoughts is respected and welcomed into 'the family' with colleagues providing support not just at work, but for those life moments that happen to all of us.
